Nokia Files Lawsuit against Apple Over iPhone

Finland-based mobile phone giant Nokia has sued Smartphone manufacturer Apple over infringement of some 10 mobile phone technologies that it has retrofitted with its iPhone.

Nokia lawyers said that they would not allow Apple to get a free ride to what they have developed over the past two decades.

The world’s largest mobile phone manufacturer Nokia Inc. has filed a lawsuit against its rival Apple Inc. over the weekend, saying that the maker of the popular iPhone has infringed some 10 mobile phone technology patents registered under the Finish-company.

Based on the documents acquired, Apple has allegedly copied several patents including speech coding, wireless data security and encryption technology, which were available in the popular iPhone models since it has started its development in 2007.The case was filed at the Delaware Federal District Court.

“We have been discussing the issue with Apple for quite some time now. But they refused to agree on the appropriate terms that we have offered them. Apple is attempting to get a ‘free ride’ over our intellectual property innovations,” Nokia’s legal department deputy Ilkka Rahnasto said.

Some analysts believe that the lawsuit has stemmed from large sales loss by Nokia due to the increasing competition being posted by Apple and Research in Motion, the maker of the Blackberry phones.Rahnasto pointed that they have invested over $60-billion in research and development of the stolen technologies in the past two decades. It will be recalled that Nokia has posted its first ever quarterly revenue loss in more than a decade of operations.

“The infringed technologies also include fundamental feature of a device that would enable new devices more compatible with one of more units to allow exchange of GSM, UMTS (3G WCDMA) and wireless LAN network standards,” the legal counsel added.
