How to start a cable company!

Are you interested in starting your own cable company? But starting any business can be really frustrating and irritating especially if you are a newcomer to the field! But before you start your own cable company there are a few things you should be aware of like,

  • You will need basic technical knowledge about cables before you can start your company. Although several companies are willing to train dealers about their products, it’s always better to have a working knowledge about the product you have to sell to make a better salesman.
  • You need to be aware of newer technological advances in the field of cables and how to transfer that knowledge to sales.
  • Market research is really important. As a small company, you cannot afford to spend a lot of money on the making and storage of the cables required for customers. Most of the companies run on the understanding that a small inventory is kept ready while orders come through stock is prepared to fill the orders. Find out what type of customers you can count on for your orders and then decide on making the inventory for storage. For this you’ll have to research the customers you have and how much stock you need to provide for it.
  • Planning is crucial to starting a new business. Make sure you have a detailed business plan for setting up your cable company and follow it to the tee. A good business plan acts as a detailed game plan on how much you can afford to spend on your business and when! Most new businesses fail due to poor money management and too quick expansion. With a good business plan, that shouldn’t happen to you.
  • As the investment required for running your company will be quite high find out whether you are happy running it on your own or want to have a partner to help you out with the finances and the decisions. You may require more than one person to decide on how you are going to set up your company and where.
  • Take the time to gather your clients and inform them of your services and what you are offering. Offer discounts for clients who buy in bulk and have a lot of future sales. Research the market to find out where you can have more clients like the cables required for setting up lighting shops and for wedding receptions. All of these require cabling and frequent repairs.

So is there a way to use the cable already laid by comcast and take over their market if can convince the customers to switch, or does comacast have the monopoly on the market because the laid all the cables? Thanks for help with this.
  • Karen said on May 22, 2010
Dear Gen, I would love to here if you found anything out from your question. I would love for someone to take over all of comcasts customers and put them out of business, someone needs to think seriously about this I know I have. Thanks
  • Shawn said on May 27, 2010
Karen and Gen - here is what I know. You cannot use the lines that Comcast uses to compete with them because they own the lines. A cable company puts the lines up at their own expense. What you would have to do is put up your own lines on the poles -called an over-build. In order to do this, you have to have pole attachment agreements, as built maps and franchise agreements with each town you plan to build. It is costly and the only way it would work would be to have a solid business plan, a state of the art head end and offer the high end technically advanced features such as triple play. Anything short of fiber to the home will land you bankrupt. Feel free to fire off any questions. I have been in the industry for 15 years and can answer any question you have. Good luck.

No one has touched on how you source the channels which you would like to rebroadcast. I would like TCM, ENCORE Westerns, and a bunch like that...who do we contact? Does anyone have links to companies which sell equipment and can help you set up your own station?
  • Jason said on April 22, 2011
I hate how one company has channels another don't. I want to create my own company for cable to provided every American Channel there is. Local Channels are all free and will be provided by state, so you will get all local channels from that state. For every 100 channels it will be $10.00 Which is fare. 600 channels would be 60.00 And I will provide the on demand, paper view and and other Have to by networks to any package. Still have to by but it's provided cheaper. Movie channels come free for the first year and $5.00 a month after.
  • Chris beginner adviser said on May 19, 2011
Jason You would never make a profit like that, I work in upper management at the local Cable Co and it is not the cable companies fault, the networks constantly demand more money to broadcast their stations resulting in the customer paying more for dervice HBO currently charges us in the ball park of 10.00 per month for each subscriber and a flat rate 125,000 per month, we currently serve around 200,000 customers. You do the math!

My question is what would be the potential startup cost be to get another cable company up and going? The cable company servicing here is headquarter in Arizona and if a channel freezes or goes out they drag their feet on getting the problem resolved.

To all of you that want to start a cable company etc... Please, really please!!! Start a cable company that will demolish all of them. What I mean is give better prices and none of that 3 or 6 month crap, keep the same price if your going to do a 2 year contract, non of that 1 year and then jacking up the price the second year. Offer good channels too many channels suck. Good luck to you

I believe micro cable companies would be the solution. As the monopoly tighten on the US market and as the economy sinks, enterprising individuals will seek to create there own opportunity and bypass the standard methods. This is especially viable in population dense areas. Example: A apartment building owner could provide his own cable service to his tenants. The "how to" is put together for that building owner through a "Franchise Lease Agreement" It provide the equipment, cable video content and a list of able subcontractors who are able to install and service the equipment. By being small you can custom the video to the consumer and bypass federal state and local restrictions because the larger partner has already complied with those regulations. I have the finance people, I need the team members to put this together. If you are interested E-mail to "The Phoenix" at phoenixhomeconst@comcast.net.
  • Robinson said on February 24, 2014
Hi guys, Just a suggestion. If you plan to provide video or movie services like comcast. Why not just get a copy right from the movie or producer of the movie and get a fast internet and have someone program a system to be able to provide movie thru internet. And as your business grows then you will have more money to spend on setting up your own network infrastructure.
