How To Start A Goodwill Store?

Recent reports show that Goodwill Industries have proven their worth despite the challenging economy that we have these days. See how they did it and how you can start your Goodwill store.

Interestingly, the recent recession that hit not only the United States but the whole world has indicated that Goodwill stores have found an amazing increase in sales.

Of course, few retailers can report the same scenario since many have experienced otherwise. As one senior store manager from Maryland says, this is the perfect time to improve the business and promote it more and more. So even though some people are still surprised by this, more and more entrepreneurs are now setting their sights on establishing their own Goodwill stores as well.

Goodwill stores also have a massive assortment of inexpensive new and slightly used items such as clothes, books, toys, housewares, furniture, etc. They already have at least 15 retail stores in Kansas alone, which could be fantastic.

Do you know how to start a Goodwill store on your own? Well, first and foremost, you must understand that several essential aspects must be considered. First, as its name implies, Goodwill Industries has a noble mission and is not just simply another business that exists to sell products. The Helping Hand of Goodwill industries aim to serve people to the extent that they even offer employment for people with disabilities. Once you check their statistics, you will discover that they hire thousands of disabled and disadvantaged people. Aside from providing job opportunities, Goodwill also serves people through revenues, services, grants, and charitable gifts. They do this to help these people develop and achieve their full potential.

Goodwill Industries' core values are respect, stewardship, ethics, learning, and innovation. Those thinking of doing business with them should likewise integrate these values into their business and personal lives to experience more success.

Goodwill always has their doors open, especially for those who want job opportunities, especially for retail, marketing, accounting, management, human resources, janitorial services, and many others.

Goodwill offers career opportunities in several areas, including retail, management, accounting, human resources, marketing, janitorial, social services, and more. Benefits for their employees and their employee's family are also in place, such as insurance coverage that could sustain an individual's medical, dental, and vision well-being. Of course, they also have time off, paid holidays, and life insurance offers.

Doing business with them and starting your own Goodwill store business should only be done if you comply with these standards. In addition, you should also comply with their mission and implement what they believe in. It's safe to say that not all entrepreneurs could be considered by Goodwill Industries. Otherwise, you might try other ventures that could offer you additional opportunities.

Hi, I am interested n learning more on how to open a Goodwill store. I live in the Asheville, NC USA area. There are currently half a dozen or so Goodwill stores in the Asheville area and could easily support several new stores. I totally agree with Goodwill's mission now and have always practiced this in my personal life as well. I always encourage small-medium size businesses to find a way to give back to the community. I feel it is only right to support the community that supports your business. For almost 20 yrs I have worked as a recruiter helping people with either find employment or finding them employment that is better suited for them than their current job is. I am an advocate of affirmative action, diversity, EEO and EOE. At your convenience please let me know the criteria and everything required to open a Goodwill store. Thank you for your time and assistance. Gary Piano, sabelpiano@yahoo.com

Folks, Goodwill is an international nonprofit. You can not simply open a store. The country is broken into territories each has it's own Goodwill, for example Goodwill Industries of Dallas or Goodwill Industries of the Southern Piedmont. Each has a board of directors, executive staff etc. Most territories have between 20- 40 stores. It's not a franchise or get rich quick setup. It is a legitimate 501(c)3, and one of the largest in the country.

if you want to open a goodwill store first off get a two year collegiate degree and maybe take some management classes and maybe work at a goodwill store and ask your manager to train you in management and after all you have accomplished all of these you are ready to manage a goodwill store but in order to open one you must check any work buildings that are available i suggest a building thats mixed in with a mall would fit the type for a goodwill building to be in order to do this you must look around a lot to see if there are any that are available and then contact the previous owner of the building

There is only one that I know of which is approximately 10 miles away and feel that the community I live in could benefit from having one closer as todays economy has hit everyone hard and many have needs. I have worked my whole life in the finance industry and have years of management and budgeting experience. I would certainly look to give back to the community by hiring special needs or the disabled as I am currently familiar and active in that arena currently.

This is hard to believe....An alleged nonprofit organization, enjoying top tax exemptions, selling Franchises in detriment of truly charity organizations as Salvation Army, Kiwanis, Lions Club, St Vicent of Paul, etc? I am shocked. I still not I've been able to swallow this......It could be interesting to see the salaries of the Goodwill Industries Chairman, Board of Directors and main executives...I think it's time the FBI, IRS, the Treasury Department and Justice, check the financial records of this octopussy enterprise working as a byprofit corporation, paying 6 figures salaries to executives, masked as a nonprofit agency....
  • Leslie11111 said on August 1, 2012
You cannot just open a Goodwill store. Goodwill doesn't sell franchises. Each territory has a charter with the International office and is only allowed to operate within their assigned region. They are all non-profits that are governed by Boards of Directors that VOLUNTEER their time and expertise in aiding in running the Goodwill entity that they serve on the Board for. Every aspect of the operation is governed by the local Board of Directors down to executive compensation.

1260 S. Military Trail Deerfield Beach FL. The shopping center is located near I-95 & 10th Ave. Prime location affording high traffic and ease of access. Highly visible location, attractive and well maintained. We are VERY interested in opening a store for our expanding community. This area is growing & in need of a local Goodwill. We have a 30% ratio of Senior Citizens and a continuing growth in families moving in. I work P/T in an Condo Association Office so I see the flexuation immediately. Our work ethics and personal ethics are in unison with your mission practices. My husband and myself have strong business backgrounds as well as a helping hand to those in need. I have volunteered at local food banks and remain in contact with them.

I am thinking of opening a "Goodwill" store. Where do I get information on the process?

I work at a goodwill store. They do not sell most of what gets donated. They take junk and hand out tax receipts like what was donated was worth something when it was not. Most donated garbage gets dumped into a big box and shipped off to a warehouse. Donate somewhere where management does not drive Cadillacs to work while their employees are paid $8.25 an hour.

I currently live in new York and I have been shopping at Goodwill stores for years now, and I would like to have my own store. Any information on how to start my own store would be very welcome. Thank you.

I am very interested in opening a GoodWill Store in our county. Hickman Co. Tennessee. All of my family has shopped GoodWill for years. There is a building vacant that would be perfect for a store that has plenty of parking. Also if it doesn't meet your criteria we have property available that we own where a building could be built. Our county desperately need JOBS JOBS and also the very reasonable items that GW offers. I have worked for the public all of my adult life. we had a grocery store for several years, retired 3 years ago from Tenn. Public Health with 32 years service, and now work at my son's BBQ restaurant. Our church offers a free hot meal every Wednesday night before services for anybody, and everybody that comes. This has been such a blessing to our community. The placement of a GW store in our county would be such an asset to our county in many many ways. Hoping to hear from you soon!!!! Debbie Pickard
