i took me some time but i have read all the post here and am still found wanting in this subject. i have a few questions. i want to know can a funeral director be licensed in two states (new york & new jersey)? who do you contact to start a remains pick up service? do you just need a transport car? can a church also operate as a funeral home and what are the steps? how much capital do you need to start a funeral home? can you own your own crematorium? can u privately build your own cemetery? i am a ex mortuary affairs specialist for the military and have decided to make this my passion in the civilian world also. i would like to start up in ny & nj and extend my professional services ti these states. my email is Bforbes225@gmail.com i would appreciate any insight offered.

I want to know how to start a Community Funeral home this is why Every person is unique, and their life and death deserves dignity and respect. caring for a loved one can be meaningful and appropriate while still remaining affordable. If you want a loved one to go out in style, not in debt, There are certain overhead expenses, including the facility itself, the cost of the vehicles(hearses and limousines) and staff salaries. when simplicity and cost containment is of interest, this new service will be a welcome aide. all the help you can give we need help to get this going thank you.

Hi i plan on opening a shared facility funeral home for the simple readon into todays times building or buying an exiting funeral home doing a fair share of business could be quite expensive. Is there anyone that can give me some advice on this endeavor. I have been a director since 1985 but only as an employee watching the owner getting richer which i do not have any problem with that. He started his own first generation business in 1963 where there was little or no competition and did 96 calls his first year. He now owns several funeral homes however when his sons got into the business well lets just say it change and not for the best. I was fortunate to learn so many valuable lessons from this man and to this day i have not seen a funeral run with such dignity and order you may think he was burying the mayor everyday. Although i live in the suburbs of phila i plan on sharing a funeral home about 25 minutes in phila. I have never been on this side of the fence so to speak. I was their prep room manager for about 400 + cases per year. And i akso like to add that we had four embalmers and three of them quit. Actually six other directors also took the same route. Here i was the only embalmer working seven days a week and granted i was doung okay. Getting paid when i came in on my days and weekends off. Well the party ended there, the controller ( the oldest son ) said to me that we need to come up with a quoto system. Any funerals over thirty per month i would get paid for. My reply was what happens when i work seven days a week and we only do thirty calls and i do not make any extra. Hus reply was dude that is how its going to be. Well i gave my notice after twenty years, So if there is anyone that can help me out PLEASE Do i need it

  • Tamarin said on February 14, 2014
@Roy - I am very interested in opening a funeral home in South Africa, and I've been accepted to to my Associate degree in Mortuary Science in Seattle from August. Is it necessary to go study abroad? I want to socialize in embalming. In the black cultures an open casket wake is very traditional and that the body be viewed for 2-3 days (usually unembalmed) & for me it would be amazing to have the deceased look as natural and peaceful as possible the last time the family views their body. I think the problem in SA though is that the 4 major funeral homes monopolize the market & mainly market for upperclass white people. The sad fact is that our black culture cannot afford embalming, let alone a decent casket & burial, things that are very important to them. The black culture don't usually prefer cremation, but it is very important that graves not be stacked on top of one another. This is becoming a problem because burial ground is becoming scarce & funeral homes don't care about the grieving families wishes. I think it is sad that something as private & painful as the death is now publicized in a Kaizer Chiefs television advert, for example. What can I do about this? I might not have the funds to go study in the US. Tamarin
