We are setting up a dairy farm in Srilanka with Australian knowhow. The project will construct 5 new modernized cattle sheds to accommodate the 5000 imported pregnant heifers and their followers by It will be a loose barn yard system. To implement this, the project proposes to establish 1000 acres of new high yielding pasture / fodder, mixed with clover. This will be in addition to 500 acres of CO3 fodder, and blue signal grass seeds, imported from Tropical Queensland in Northern Australia. We are looking for Joint Venture partners/ Investors who can Invest up to USD 6 Million in this project.

Hello, Am from Bangalore n am continuing my family owned business(a plastic injection moulding unit). We have a cow farm in Trichur Kerala state.which is also my home town. My dad had started this a few years back. We have about 5-6 cows presently and a well built cow shed which is situated in about an acre of land with sufficient water source, 10 cc bio gas plant etc. It is a well ventilated shed with adequate lighting etc which can easily accommodate 30 cows. Now I want to run this in a professional way. All these days there was nobody to manage the same and every month we literally ended up making loss of Rs5,000-10,000. I am looking for any good suggestions for improving the profitability (I am not looking for high returns but i should not go under loss) the main problem we are facing is non availability reliable laborers, we have manual machines for milking the cows, also i am not worried about the market for the milk/products i have got various marketing plans, but the criteria is only the laborers. I want to expand the farm to a min of 50 cows by the end of the year. Is there any automated process available for bathing the cows, cleaning etc. as i want to minimize the labor involvement. If yes what would be the investment required and what is the minimum manpower required- what would be the returns for investments. As i have already burnt my fingers, I dont want to invest too much on this. Can you also kindly let me know what is the man hour required per cow per day other than milking as the cost of labour in kerala is too high. Kindly send me your suggestions and advises. Cheers, Vipin V vipinvnair2000@yahoo.com

Hei all from Orissa, Glad to know about your interest to start Dairy Farms in Orissa. Its good to think about owning a farm. But before starting it you all must go to grass root of the farming or business. Go to people in rural orissa and see the people who are or were in this business. Talk with them and experience the situation of dairy farming or cow keeping. Its better to first know better about this and go ahead. To know more you can mail me at ranjit.patri@yahoo.com or call-09213732494.

I would like to setup a cattle farm with about 1000 cows, in order to create some job in that area as well as help the needy people. Cut grass as well as hey can be managed from the nearby agriculture farm land but not sure about the required amount. Someone please guide me with initial setup procedure and a ball park investment requirement. Also I do have a stupid idea of building multistory building for housing those cows, not sure how feasible the idea would be. My Contact information: Shaikh Haque E-mail: admin@agamiralo.com

I am about to retire in a year's time. I have planned to settle down in my native village in Himachal Pradesh. I have purchased eight acres of semi forest land, which is capable of providing fodder to the fifty animals at least. I would like to start dairy farming with five cows and five buffaloes, engage one or two persons on full time basis and supervise entire activity routinely myself. Selling milk nearby is no problem. Kindly comment.Thanks.

Are some types of soils more suitable for cattle breeding? Are calcium rich soils a pre-requisite for good cattle rearing?Rainfall in excess as in the north east, does it affect milk yields or health of cattle ?Does viruses and other illnesses afflict cattle more in locations with more precipitation.

@Harjit, Before you start a dairy farm you need to know about these things. create a business plan, arrange capital. Find a company you can sell your milk to, Get your cows. I think Holsteins, jerseys and brown swiss are the best breed for more milk production. Before buying your cows you should know they are healthy and free of disease.

@Rajeev Singh Bagga, @Vijaya - Holsteins, Jerseys and Brown Swiss Cattle are the best breed for more milk making. A Good quality Jersey and Holstein cow in India cost approximately Rs.40000-50000.

@srikar, the ratio should be 5 to 6 cows per acre. Machine required for small scale diary farms are(milking pails, milk cans), chaff cutter machine, Generator, Borewell With Motor, Ropes, chains, water pipes, Loader for Tractor etc. Machine milking will be more convenient as compared to hand milking but it totally depends upon your budget. A good cow like Holstein or jersey cow cost around Rs40000-50000. one good breed of cow can give 20-25 lt of milk per day. life of each cow is maximum 10years.
