@L.ARUN, @Tej N. If you will go for good breed cows that will cost you approximately Rs40000-50000. You need to construct dairy sheds, milking parlour, feed store, implements room, milk room, chaff cutter shed etc. 400 sq ft will be good enough per animal for 20-30 cows. If you want you can reduce it to 350 sq ft. These are the most essential machinery required for diary farming like Milking Equipment(milking pails, milk cans), chaff cutter machine, Generator, Borewell With Motor, Ropes, chains, water pipes, Loader for Tractor.

sir, i want to construct a small dairy farm with 20 cattle. i have 60 cent of land. Please give more suggestion regarding the construction, feed management, labor cost, purchase of cow, available loans
  • Raghunath expert adviser said on February 28, 2011
@RAINA, Construction and labor cost varies according to the place. One hectare of land can manage around 20 cows and it cost approximately 3 to 7 lakhs depends on infrastructure and varies with place to place. In "loose housing system" there are various advantages like less labor require to construct the sheds, feeding is easy, construction cost is less, in future you can change the structure easily if you want but the only disadvantage is you need more space, fear of natural calamities and Spread of disease is possible here. I suggest height of shed should be 12-13 ft in middle and 7-8 feet at the corners. farm should be perpendicular to wind direction. if your budget is more than try to consult local dairy farm consultants to help you more. If you have time then you can visit local farms to gather more knowledge.

sir,i am a young (40y)automobile engineer by interest in agriculture left all jobs and started cultivation nearly 12y back. by interest in animals started a small diary with 6no's H.F cows brought from EAROD, TAMILANADU, 3y back. but i am not able to get full yield from cows. some farmers brought cows from different places like maharastra, chittur, B'loor etc., they also face the same problem. our place is a coastal area with plenty of resources. we are from east godary district andhra pradash. we are in godavari river delta with normal atmosphier. pl let me know where we can get cows to suit our area and gives higher yields. thanks
  • Raghunath expert adviser said on March 1, 2011
@s.saradhi, if the breed is good then the yield should be same. There could be some issues due to the coastal belt, have consulted local vets? You also need to get them their required diet, don't expect to get the same results by feeding them less.

@devana srinivasarao, to have a 100 crores turnover per year you need to setup a plant of 300 crore size and 30% cash to start the business with the loan. In order to secure a loan you need a collective collateral of 300 crore at least.

@Rajesh Kushwaha, your earning will be low as you can manage to buy only 2-3 good cows with this amount. Still you will need shed and workers to manage this. Your monthly earning can't be more than 5K rupees for this investment.

@anand, Hi anand, you kind of asked everything that one needs to know about this farming business. I am deleting your comment and adding your questions with answers here. The answers to questions that i skip can be found above so you got to read bit more.
    • how much should i spend for each cow each year on?
I think food will cost you around Rs.25000-30000 and current bill will cost you around Rs.5000-6000 per year depending on your place.
    • what would be the cost of a milking machine?
A milking machine will cost you approximately Rs50000 but it can vary from Rs.50,000-Rs.300,000 depending on its quality and ability to store milk.
    • How many liter of milk is produced by day per cow
There are many cow breed who can give more than 25lt of milk per day but i think the pure breeds of Switzerland origin and cross breed are the best. Pure jersy and HF can give 20-40 lt depending on food and weather.

hi, i am anand, thanks for sending me some answers of my questions(question no. 723). i have few more questions

If i bring few pure hf breed capable of producing 30 lit, then these cows must be kept in a air conditioned room. on doing so the current charges will increase so my question is that will the government give any concession in current charges in village areas. i have heard that in village areas current charges are free for agricultural purpose.
  • anand said on March 8, 2011
should i pay tax for the profit which i get from dairy farm if yes how much much
  • Raghunath expert adviser said on March 8, 2011
@anand, Hello Anand, if you are a senior citizen then you are not needed to pay if your earning is less than Rs.250,000. If you are not senior citizen then you are exempted from tax if your earning is less than Rs.180,000

@anand, please don't copy paste stuffs from other sites, our system will delete them. Anyway, if you need anything from those questions then use the contact us page from the bottom to email me. Current bill varies from state to state and I don't think it is free in any state yet. It can be subsidized but all states are not giving such facilities. You need 30-35 C for these cows I think you can manage to provide such temperate without having the ACs too.

I want to start it in rajasthan. I want to invest more on livestock as it would give production and lesser on machinery so kindly advice me for the machinery that is a must in dairy farm for 1000 cows. How much space would be required for the animals as well as for the fodder. Secondly i have heard about the fodder beet which can be grown on just 1 acre land and can feed 80 to 100 cows for 60-70 days, so is that a good feed for the animals and is this info correct. Kindly guide me.

@Nitin Bisht, Hello Nitin Bisht, You can easily get the loan from any rural banks or from NABARD for dairy farming. For getting the bank loan You should apply to your nearest branch of a commercial bank along with the application form and business plan. The items of the loan would include construction of sheds, purchase of equipments and purchase of animals etc. May be you can get the feeding cost of animals for initial one-two months. You can get some more valuable advice on previous comments as well.

@BASHARAT, Hi Basharat, Here is the details of Dairy farm shed construction.

    • Each cow needs at least 1-1.25 mt width and 1.5 - 1.75 mt length as standing space. You should keep some open area for animals.
    • The floor of the shed should have proper slopping and concrete as well.
    • The roof should be simple, you can use iron sheet for the roof. The height of roof should be 8' side and 15' high in center. If you will use iron sheet, you can use grass on top to cool in summer.

@Manish Malhotra, Hello Manish, You can get the machinery requirement for diary farm in above comments. Here are some tips on your questions.

    • Space require for a diary farm along with diary shed, milking parlor, maternity pens, straw store, feed store, implements room, milk room, chaff cutter shed, manure pit etc should be 500sq.ft per animal. As you are planning for 1000 animals you can reduce the space to 350 sqft per animal.
    • About fodder production space requirement, i think 1 acre land is good enough for 4-5 adult animals. But with the new technology the space required for fodder cultivation can reduce but i do not think 1 acre is enough for 80-100 cows by any means.

Hi, I am from Bangalore, and own lands in Andhra Pradesh , ( penukonda). From all the posts that I have read here, it looks like this -- A lot of people want to enter dairy farming as an alternate income , let me clarify that it does not happen that way.
    • You are either fully committed and hands on or you are better off doing some other field of work.
    • Secondly , there are programs to help budding entrepreneurs run by Animal Husbandry dept in the respective states , kindly contact them for further details regarding course and duration , the fee is not expensive.
    • Thirdly the quantum of money to be invested needs to be in alignment with the amount of commitment and work that an entrepreneur wants out of his enterprise , That calculation can only be made by self assessment.
    • Fourthly there is no sure fire scheme to succeed, only patience hard work and diligence pays .
    • The returns are around 30% per year , Most of the regular and consistent market is to sell to Dairy Cooperatives or Private Players like Reliance or Godrej , or Hatsun if they are available in your area. It is a viable business with decent returns and needs a lot of commitment.

Hi all, I am a NRI in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, but basically from Meerut,UP.I am planning to start a dairy farm in India on the same pattern as that of Al Safi, Al Marai or Nada but of course not on the same scale in the beginning. As I went through all the massages above I came to know that there are thousands of people interested in starting dairy farms on smaller scales ranging from10-15 cows to say 100 cows but do not have the knowhow about this business. There are chances that many of these small dairy farms will end up in loss and become the feed stock of the big fishes already established in the market.

I , therefore, call upon all the interested people to come together, form a big group, combine resources and collectively start a dairy farm on much larger scale on share holding cum employment basis. In doing so we are going to reduce the chances of failure to the minimum. I specially call upon the people who are currently employed in different dairy farms and are interested in the proposal to come and join the group as your expertize will help the venture and reduce the need to hire the work force from out side.

The final size of the project will depend upon the response from you people but in no way it is going to be Rs 100 crore including promoter's share and loans from financial institutions. I am personally going to contribute around Rs.one crore in the project. People who are interested in the proposal or have a query, clarification or suggestion, please write to me on my e-mail:samiarafi@yahoo.com, Thanks and Regards, Rafiuzzaman Khan

If u have the land or capital required for setup a dairy farm or can get a loan go for it great just remember farming never stops, cows require milking twice a day 6-7am and around 3-4pm, the rest of your day will involved feeding out after the first milking is done, mending fences, adjusting feed breaks in the paddock for morning and night. Cows in my country cost around $2,500 or at a rate of 0.7939 will buy $1984 USD. land also is over 1 mill USD, big milking companies wont pick up from farms if you have under 100 cows, friesian or Jersey cows are normally the best. just remember cows can get Mastitis a inflammation of breast tissue, which is not safe for human consumption (consult your local vet) Cows also love silage, rotting grass put under a plastic cover we kept a big paddock free from use for silage. great to use over winter when grass is slow to grow. Peace be with you!

  • Ramulu said on December 20, 2011
Hi, I need some information pls, can anyone tell me what will be the cost of Murrah with yield of 10-12 ltrs of milk and how much will Jersey cows cost with yield of 18-20 ltrs. Pls also let me know where can I get good quality buffaloes and cows.

Hi chandrashekar.gajengi - all nationalised banks are giving loans and there is subsidiary of 25%. You will have to cultivate 1 acre of land for 7-10 buffaloes and 1 acre of land for 5-6 cows as green grass is needed more for cows. The best breed of buffaloes are Murrah and Jaffrabadi and cows are Jersey. Holstein Fraisen are good but are very sensitive around hyderabad as it is hot atmosphere. They are good in cold climate. I dont know the cost, am trying to get the best price for cattle as I have to buy them. I have applied for bank loan and it is sanctioning it for me.
