This is a great and informative site and I gladly appreciate the vast networking and exchange of business ideas within this site, like everyone on the site i am also interested in this industry and have researched it for the past two years, the following conclusions were drawn: funding is hard to find and that there is a great level of contracts available versus the number of trucks available for such contracts. As a start up company you can look at a safe option to subcontract mainly in the mining industry or manufacturing to build rapport and a name then you can seek vehicle finance after two years in successful operation as most tractor-truck providers do grant you that, now this would mean that you would need to rent or set an amount for the purchase of trailers. lets exchange ideas and strive for self enrichment my email address is mxolisinduli@gmail.com, please feel free to contact me. thank you.

I am in Atlanta, my friend started this business in 2009, and he is very much worried about the investment. I am his true friend just to help him, find the questions of hard questions. He invested 100,000.00 recently to some trucking company. The guy seems to be honest (or do not know you help me). he said the booker company lady and the company took $35,000, and did not pay, he said suddenly the insurance payment we have to pay... he has six trucks almost half of them standing always with some defects. Help us how to talk to this man about our monthly profit or took about all money. he looks broke right now. What important point my friend has to ask this company person, who eats his all money in trucking business.

I would like to start small. I have companies i can approach for contracts. I live in abuja, nigeria and this business is HOT. I never realized it until now. i dont have much capital but i want to start out by approaching an existing company, act as an agent between them and my clients (under a strict agreement), then later start fully on my own. Its obviously very tasking but from what i can tell, its worth it at the end. Kindly advise me by sending a mail to pauldkobasi@yahoo.com or call/text me on +2348127738435. Thanks.

To all those willing to start trucking businesses but do not know where to start: you need a truck to start! Dont be gullible and listen to people saying if you have a contract first all your problems will be over. Even with a contract banks do not give money. Get a truck first, there are hundreds of contracts out there if you have a truck readily available. "But how do I get a truck?" you ask. That is the trick, imagine if truck finance was readily available to everyone, the industry would be over saturated by now. It would no longer be worth going into. So...you will need to stretch your imagination a little and find different, unconventional ways in order to finance your first truck. FACT: it is not as easy as you are made to believe. Anything easier than this might be a scam

Hi. I have read all the above questions with disbelief. It is amazing how many people want to start up a transport company without doing enough research or further education. the truth is you will need to pay for that business to start up, operate, and hopefully flourish. the ans justifies the means. (meaning you reap what you sow, or what you get in the end will be determined by what you put in). I have been in the road freight sector for 18 years, since 1994. i do NOT run my own transport business. I have hung up my gloves for a less stressful business. I am more than happy to advise all potential transporters on what i believe are best practices, though you will find practices differ from region to region. I have been operating in the Southern Africa region for the last 18 years.

My services are simple. i help you access capital (if you qualify..it is not a given that because you have a big idea, some one will throw money at you)..i have templates for monitoring your efficiency levels, monitoring your vehicle performance, driver performance, cost and income levels, communication between client, yourself, your drivers etc..and ultimately you determine your ability to make money or lose money. All this comes at a cost but then again there's no business that comes for free..or we would all be smiling all the way to the bank. Email me on chris@cnm.co.zw and i will respond individually to your questions. Give you a quick analysis and take it from there. After the analysis you will get a cost sheet with terms and conditions for your specific requirements and we can take it from there. So long.

Hi i'm interested in starting a trucking business i do have a company which is willing to fund for a truck but they require a contract how do i get a contract without having a truck i live johannesburg ,south africa
  • Chris beginner adviser said on January 29, 2012
@dikeledi have you identified the type of work you would like to be contracted to carry out? this would determine the type of truck you are shopping for, thus in turn the contracts you are looking for. It would be extremely vague and ambitious to attempt to get a contract without understanding the contractual requirements first. I would suggest looking at the type of work that is being carried out in your area that needs transporting and looking for the type of truck to suit your needs, identifying the costs of purchase, maintenance and after sales support from truck dealers, preferably in the Gauteng area (where you are located)and then approach the marketing of your service after that. Good luck

I have R30 000 in capital and looking to get into trucking. Can there be possibilities in terms of getting a truck or into a partnership with that kind of money? Please give me ideas on how I can use the money to get into business. Thanks
  • Chris beginner adviser said on February 3, 2012
@Blessing Pontsho. Hi. firstly you say you need advise on a promising coal transportation deal, but you currently don't have a contract, neither do you have the trucks i take it? Well put simply coal transportation is lucrative if the rates are right. secondly the decision to lease or buy brand new, needs more scrutiny on your finances..ie. how much do you intend on borrowing, what will your income be and will your cash flows be able to accommodate the payments to the bank...over what period...etc. That however is a whole ball game on its own. What i can highlight off the top of my head are the challenges you can expect to face: you will face stiff competition from other transporters 1st of all, rate cutting and contesting with others who have been running those contracts before you will be your 1st challenge. Rail is your biggest challenge when moving coal. rail is half the price of road and carries 10 times the capacity of road in a single haul. so you will need to bear that in mind. the determination of rates is done on the fact that road can move the product much quicker and hopefully more efficiently thus you will have the slight edge. Analise your route, loading and offloading conditions and times to determine the impact of the contract on your maintenance costs and turn around times, you do not want to be parked unnecessarily during productive time either waiting to load/offload or repairing trucks. Analise their loading requirements, is it 1ton bags which can be loaded onto a flat bed trailer (thus requiring cranes or forklifts to load and offload)or is it break bulk (requiring you to have a tipper truck which is more efficient and professional but more expensive for you to acquire)these things considered will determine how much you will need as initial start up capital, thus if you're borrowing how much to borrow and in the long run how profitable the contract is. Having said what i have said... this is just an overview...more detail is needed to get you running. do your own evaluation and if you still have queries lets us know. Good luck!

@bheki, your enthusiasm is fantastic, but i must warn that with R30,000, you will not really  be able to set a 'Trucking business' per say. You probably wouldn't even buy a reasonable bakkie to set up a courier company with. however i think because you have the interest, i would recommend you shop around from various truck dealerships in your area, get an idea on pricing for trucks and trailers and we can take it from there if you should still wish to pursue your intentions of setting up a transport business.

I am running a transport business and it is difficult to get a finance, i struggle since 2005 to get finance and i was having R200 000 as a deposit but i failed. And for those people who want to start transport business it better to do a personal loan because transport business is risky and is difficult to get finance. And you must also be aware that it is easy that other people can knock you.Now i bought a second hand truck and trailer and it is difficult to get a stable work for my truck. I tried to transport containers but the payment is not good at all, all the money goes to diesel and driver salary.

There is only major key to a successful transport company. That is you must have a good paying contract. This industry is very competitive, even cut throat and unless you have a contact that will guarantee you a rate, then i would suggest you look for something else.

USA. I have been in this business for 15 years. The statements I have read from this site doesn't surprise me. Rates decreased while cost of living increased 60%. Why did rates decrease, because government placed a false idea that market was short of truck drivers, there by flooding the market with drivers. If there was shortage the rates would increase not decrease. The money isn't there like it use to be.

Hi. I have been interested in starting a trucking business for a number of years now and I don't know how. I have noticed that there are a lot of opportunities on the market but I do not know how to penetrate. At the moment I do not have a truck, have not yet registered the business and I wonder if can funding if I don't have capital. Is it even possible to get a contract even if I do not have a truck of my own, then get funding through the contract? At the moment I am situated in Brits but willing to work anywhere in the North West, Gauteng, Mpumalanga of Kwazulu Natal.

I'm William from Ghana in west africa....as you all know Ghana is a third world country and a free world...is easy for one to set-up business if you have capital. taxes are very down and one can make money soon...however, getting grant for loans is not easy. I'm interested in truck business that's the tipper to convey sand, stones, gravels and building materials to construction site...getting the tipper here is very expensive and few people owns it and demand for goods and services here is very high. one can make $500.00ud a day...that's the fixed money for sales per day. imagine having 4 of this trucks in ghana here? if anyone who is interested in doing business with me is highly welcome...e-mail me so that we can take it from there...no rushing...just taking step by step. oforismiles@yahoo.com...thank you
