I currently own a small trucking company in the Hampton Roads VA area, (Suffolk, VA), I have been in business for three years. I can personally tell anyone interested in starting a trucking company to do your due diligence!!!! Research your targeted markets and draft a business plan. Know the direction you will be leading your company. It doesn't take as much start up capital as one would image, however, you can never have enough when it comes to a start up. There are steps you need to take, the first is of course your business plan, next securing capital, purchasing equipment, insurance, trucking authority..(state and federal), equipment tags and permits..(IRP,IFTA,NYHUT,KYU), considering factoring your bill of ladings in the beginning for cash flow, and using brokers. It is important that throughout your operations that you be on the lookout for direct shippers willing to use your company to eliminate the middleman, (brokers), at that point you will be afforded the opportunity to set your rates for loads. i'm in the in home delivery/moving business i currently have 4 trucks that are operating under a broker. i am in toronto, canada. i've been trying to break out of this bubble it seems like all the bigger brokers have the game in lock. i currently deliver for 3 furniture/appliance retailers and they are one of the biggest retailers in ontario. sometimes i feel lost and loose focus because i dont know how to break the bubble and grow. i've been thinking about opening a training school where i train new guys with and how to perform in home deliveries along with safety and what not.. i would love to hear back from you and get some advice thanks
