How to Start a Lobster Farm

If you want to own a lobster farm, you will need to determine the different species and pick one that you can raise comfortably. You will need to know about proper feeding and maintenance so that the lobsters will grow quickly.

Find potential clients so that you can market the lobsters with ease and earn profits.

The Opportunity

Lobsters are pricey whether you purchase them locally or in the international market. This is a highly-priced marine crustacean. These crustaceans can only be caught using gill nets and since the stocks are dependent on the catch, the price is really high. If you live in the coastal areas, you might want to invest in a lobster farm. Lobster farming is viable and lucrative so you will surely earn a lot of profits.

The Different Species

As you can see, gourmet meals will remain incomplete without the lobsters. You need to be area that lobsters have 3 species – tiger lobster, bamboo lobster, and the adik-adik lobster. The appearance of these species also varies; as the name suggests, the tiger lobsters have spotted legs while the bamboo lobsters have striped legs that appear like that of bamboos. The adik-adik is reddish black in color. If you’re into lobster farming, you can opt for the tiger or the bamboo since these are the two most common species being farmed today.

Choosing the Site

The site of the farm is vital. It should have sandy ground and temperate water current. During low tide, the water’s depth should be maintained at one meter and the water should have high salinity like marine water. You will need to construct a pen. 200 fingerlings of lobsters should be placed in a pen that is 20 sq m. If you want to monitor the lobsters easily, you can place the pen near your house. For the pen’s corners, you can use bamboo poles. Get a plastic net and enclose the bamboo. To ensure that the lobsters won’t be able to escape, the ground should also have a net. Since the pen will be encountering strong waves and current, you should construct firm walling and corners. The top portion of the pen can be covered using bamboo slats. It should have a small opening for purposes of feeding and especially for harvesting.

Stocking and Harvesting

The fingerlings should be weighed regularly. You can stock 10 lobsters weighing 150-200 grams in a 1-sq meter pen. To prevent defacing, the lobsters should be dropped carefully into the pen. Make sure that you do this when it’s high tide. Pick the one having the same sizes because these crustaceans are carnivorous. If you mix the small and large lobsters, the smaller ones can get eaten. Harvesting can be done after 6-10 months when the lobster is already 900 to 1,000 grams. You will need extra help if you maintain several pens.

I own a 5 acre parcel in central Florida with the potential to purchase more, and am strongly considering a lobster farm operation. I own a manufacturing company with 30 years of experience in most all facets of manufacturing. I have the capability to construct large fiberglass tanks housed in long steel structure buildings, also capable of constructing. The tanks can be water temperature regulated in the summer months via chiller systems. Water is not an issue as deep wells are a viable solution at this location. I would like the farm not only to raise and distribute, but also we are located in an area where public attraction is a becoming more and more popular. My visions include a destination and education as well, right down to a product related gift shop. I would appreciate if I could get some response on the subject of above ground Florida lobster breeding, and may even consider a partnership on a monetary level. We have no problem catching lobsters in front of our land, my question is how do we propagate the lobsters we catch and how and when do we separate the adult mating lobsters from the tiny just born baby lobster?, What do we feed them, is cooked chicken good or is that going to present a health problem? hello. I am looking to start a lobster farm. I am from india state maharashtra dist chandrapur. Help me and guide to start i will be thankful to u.
  • Raghunath expert adviser said on April 5, 2011

@abdul salim, Hi abdul salim, Well lobster farming is quite expensive but must say a very profitable business. Here are some points which will help you for starting your farm.

    • First you need to decide which breed/kind of lobster you want to farm. I think aspiny lobster is best for this climate as India has warm climate.
    • Choose a place to start your farm. Your land should be nice flat and there should be good facility for accessing clean water.
    • They can grow well in temperature between 26-35 degree celsius. Usually changes of water quality is not a good symbol for spiny lobster. usually in rainy season water quality changes so you need to take care of that.
    • you should continuously keep circulating the water specially during night when the lobsters feed.
    • Normally lobster are feed trash fish like red bigeye, lizardfish and ponyfish even you can feed them sea snails, oysters, and cockles etc.

I am now into 7th years of self-funded research and development program to culture this type of lobster near or within a city. Sir it is impossible to grow lobster in earthen pond because of uncontrolled condition. However, it is suitable if you grow them in concrete tanks with daily change water or flow through system and also in cage or pen where there is clear water and sandy bottom with a salinity of 30ppt or more. Feeding can be done only once or twice during late afternoon and midnight. Better to monitor left over so it will not pollute the water.

Hello, my name is Gary. I am about to move from The US to the Philippines in Ormoc city. I thought that after doing some research, I thought I should look into it further. So I was hoping to get some kind of a response for information on the subject matter. i would like to know How much money one would need to start such a business as well as when to harvest, the best ways to start, and maybe shipping costs and concerns. So if you would be so kind to get back to me your response would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time, and have a great day.

Starting a Lobster farm requires an sizable investment as well as expertise. Cultivation in tanks for lobsters has been tried but success rate is never as good compared to sea cages. Here is a video on how Lobsters are grown from 50gram to 1 kiolgram in sea cages.
