Hello. I am looking at buying a local market/store. They serve food as well. Pizza, subs, pasta... and a special type of local donuts. The place also has 2 rental apartments above. I have so many questions but not sure exactly where to start. asking price is $325 and they claim to be making $70,000 a month. What are the major things I need to be asking and what to look out for?

I am interested in opening a salvage grocery store in northern IL. I have been doing some research and learning. I am not sure what to expect as a ballpark figure for the initial start up costs. I realize that will vary for the location and other bills, but I am only looking for a rough estimate so I have an idea. I would appreciate information from anyone that has experience in operating this type of store or anyone with information/links for information. I have heard that they typically only survive 1-3 years. Does anyone have knowledge of this being accurate? Thanks everyone and have a great day.
  • Mark beginner adviser said on October 5, 2011
Susan, hard biz to start, a reg grocery store is on a .8 to 1% profit..a great one can achieve 8 to 10% there is very low profit margin in this kind of store..start up cost has many variables...gro? produce? meat? need coolers ect..size of store, utilities..you need an LLc because the type of people that shop these love to sue! grocery outlet is a chain of discount groceries but there always selling ect..very tough..just a round figure to tell you would be 150000to 500000.! you can buy damaged or salvage gro by the pallet but most the times you dont know what is all on it..things you need things you dont...good luck

Good Afternoon, I found this blog and have found all the information very helpful. I am looking to start a hispanic grocery store in the Ocala, FL area and could use and appreciate all the information I can get. My biggest concern is finding trustworthy and reliable food suppliers so if anyone knows where i can shop for my inventory at low prices and good quality I would really appreciate the help. Also, I was researching the permits and licenses required to have a grocery store and from my research it looks like I need an Occupational license from my county and I need to get a business license from the state. I also learned that I need to have inspections done from the fire department, health department. But is this it? Thanks again, any information is greatly appreciated!!!

Hi! I'M FROM CHARLOTTE,TX. I am interested in buying a small grocery business already established that a friend of mind owns. I've worked in the retail business for about 25yrs, i work as a bookkeeper, cashier and i am a grocery manager for the past 4yrs. I've always wanted my own business and this friend of mine wants to sell her business to me but my credit is not very good and like some said i work from paycheck to paycheck. I want to know how i can buy this business and who can help me and advise me on what kind of income i need to start up. I have friends that know a lot about managing a business that can help me. This store has a fresh cut meat counter. I love working in public and i think i have very good customer service and i believe in putting my customers needs first and provide them with the best service i can give them because they will be the ones who will determine if my business succeeds or not. I believe i can make it and be successful, with the oil boom going on around here there is a lot of new people in the area and the store is right where the public can see it. Please give me some advise and let me know how i can make my dream come true plus help my community better strive. thank you Juanita

Hi i'm from wisconsin i live in a small village i have managed small and large restaurants and have decided to take a different approach with my customer skills and needs of food. I own a old 1800's grist mill and thought a store would be the most appropriate business to put in there. i have been doing research with companies to see whats the best for our soon to be business planning is not the easiest but does take time. our store just because of the variety and concept of the business will be around $32,000 just for food and packaging supplies and equipment on the high side $10,000. i have learned so much with taking three years to plan and research this industry. the only thing i'm uncertain of is estimating certain part of cash flow and profit/loss. if i can help any one with my learning experience let me know.

  • Latt said on March 3, 2012
HL, I was in the grocery business for many years. You definitely have a challenge on your hands if your major competitor is next door and is expanding while your business is slipping. Here are some things you need to consider to keep your customers and to gain new customers. Visit the competitors store and identify what they are doing better than you and then match their efforts and then exceed their efforts if possible.

Identify what you are doing better than they are and capitalize on your strengths. Make sure your store is spotless clean! Get to know your customers. Train everyone to learn the customers by name. Customers will feel they are important to you. Market your store well with nice displays and reasonable prices. I could go on for ever but I will not. Just try to make the consumers visit to your store much more pleasant than that of your competition. Good luck, Latt

I live in NY andbid like to open up a supermarket or grocery store. I liked to know what the start up cost would be. My thoughts are to open up the store not far from where I live (Westchester, NY). I'm thinking of turning it into a family business. I'ld like information on how to import meats and fish. I'ld like to have a deli section and specialize in cultural items from the Carribbean (from foods, fruits to hair supplies). I've seen a Japaneae market like this and I appreciated the concept. I would appreciate knowing how much the start up cost would be as well as how much I'd have to spend to maintain the market. Thank you I can be reached at shop4Meg@gmail.com

Its one of the coolest businesses you can open. You get to meet new and interesting people and a daily basis but I have to say it can also be a heartbreak if you don't approach it correctly. Yes, location is very important, as is the size of the store you want to open. Small Mom and Pop's do very well in small areas where the need for day to day goods keeps daily cash flow equaled to your daily purchases. Larger operations tend to get more costly so the proper calculations for the needed profit are very important to understand. I've worked in the supermarket industry for most of my life and I see a problem that causes many a start-up's to fail. I won't get into buying goods correctly, the location site, setting up good receiving records, good control on your cash registers (each person must count out their own till), customer service, store sets....but I will mention one important thing. Making sure you earn enough money on the products you sell. Its called Mark-up and Mark-on in the industry. Most folks make this very serious mistake in calculating their anticipated gross profit. If you simply just go about and throw 30% percent on lets say a $1.00 on a can of green beans, thinking you've just made a nice 30% margin, then think again. Yes, you mark-on is .30 cents but look at it again, its closer to 23%. 7% is a big difference when you start adding volume to the picture. That could be your rent, maybe your clerk costs, maybe your loan load....but it makes a difference in the real world.

Since I'm not a great writer, I copied a web site address that will explain to you in a much better written piece about the difference between Mark-on and Mark-up. Please take the time to read it. Its a very important part of the process and can knock the poop out of your mind set, thinking you have more money to take home at the end of the day and find out that you don't! I've seen a lot of people make this mistake and it cost many of them their stores. Its all in the numbers fellow supermarket retailers. Make sure you have it, before you go out and spend it. Lets make sure, cause opening up a small one, is just about as hard as opening up a big one. Good Luck.
