joseph karimi(kamumbiproi@yahoo.com): I can train interested individuals or groups on mushroom farming. This will be theoretically via e-commerce whereby i will be sending you information on how to go about it plus routine response to your communication, provided you will be paying me satisfactorily for my services. While we shall undertake the task at your own risk, we should either start the operation with optimism or not get started. Success is mainly for risk takers. Just to introduce myself briefly, i am a 48 year old Kenyan chemical laboratory analyst who has worked in several local and international companies. Nowadays i survive on applying my reasonably vast knowledge in understanding notes and observable facts concerning applied sciences, especially in farming. For instance, you can involve me in an economically viable project of your choice. Pay me to do the relevant research in areas where it is done, in libraries or even from internet sources to my level best. I prefer to operate on a first come first served basis.

The quality of my mushrooms are very high. It took me about a year to understand each & every aspect of mushroom cultivation specially dealing with those small irritating flies. And guess what the cultivation can be done whole year with the help of Air Conditioner. I am going to start my own farm in the coming October as soon as my University exams will end. I read with interest so many of you wanting to be mushroom farmers. You may all be interested in my "opinion" I am a commercial mushroom farmer here in Zimbabwe, born and lived in Tanzania many years, I have many people approaching me for advice on what to do and how to do it, unless you have unlimited money to spend "throw away" then the following may be of help.
1.Button and open brown mushrooms can be grown anywhere, often at great expense. Locate your project at the highest/coolest elevation, day temps 20 deg and night temps 10 to 20deg locating the project close to market is well and good but high temps in tropical areas will prohibit this unless you are to invest in massive cooling(refrigeration) power outages in most of africa will limit this too. Raw materials are available in most countries, I use bush grass instead of wheat straw.
    2. An inexperienced person will take many years to learn how to constantly grow mushrooms, a 5 year working and learning period on a successful farm is only just enough! you have to avoid costly mistakes and the only way is to have the experience, or make the mistakes and pay dearly for them!! Failed mushroom farmers are many, and with less money in their pockets too! Bill Isemonger ex Tanzania

There seem to be any amount of potential mushroom growers. It has been made clear by many authors that mushroom farming is costly and time consuming, this is correct, what is needed is a small viable mushroom farm/training centre where growers can work and get hands on experience, without this, mistakes are made for years, with much money being wasted, I should know, I started alone knowing nothing, 20 years ago,my knowledge has been gained over years visiting mushroom farms in different countries and trial and error. 5 years is a good time span to gain practical experience, studying and reading is not nearly enough, Bill

  • FLORENCE said on March 5, 2011
I stay in Pune district state Maharashtra I would like to know how to grow mushrooms at home .
  • Raghunath expert adviser said on March 5, 2011
@FLORENCE, welcome to our site. Mushroom growing at home initiates with choosing the mushroom that you will grow at home. oyster, shiitake and white button mushroom are the most popular home growing mushroom. Although different mushrooms have different growing mediums but you can easily grow them at home. First you need to buy spore from your nearest mushroom dealer. The second step should be you need to place them in basement or a unused cabinet will also work because they need dark, cool place to grow. Place the growing medium in a 20-25 degree area or 2-3 weeks. After 2-3weeks the spore will have rooted. Then place your mushroom in a 5-10 degree celsius temp area. Put at least 1 inch of soil on top of the spore and cover the soil with damp cloth, keep spraying water on top of it. You need to spray water on the cloth when it becomes dry. mushrooms will pop out in 2-3 weeks. When their cap is fully opened and has separated from the stem means they are ready for harvesting.

@Carlo, usually Oyster and shiitake mushrooms are best for home based mushroom farming. They need a bit high temp, humidity and fresh air than white button mushroom. You can grow them in wood waste products, including hardwood chips, chopped cereal straws or corn cobs. You need to put at least 1 inch of soil on top of the spawn and cover it with a damp cloth. Make sure to keep the cloth wet. with in 2-3weeks the mushrooms will pop out and can be harvested.

@laxmisatyavati.P, Hello laxmisatyavati.P, The first thing you need of course money and land. If you have these two things then there are some basics things to know, those are listed below.

    - Choose the mushroom you want to grow usually there are two kinds of mushrooms available one which prefer to grow on woody material and another one which prefer to grow on compost. You can decide that as per your location type and budget.
    - Buy mushroom growing kits to proceed further.

@ABDALLAH, Hi ABDALLAH, it is really difficult to give an exact information as you have not mentioned upfront about the location, initial investment and what type of mushroom you will prefer to farm. Here are some points which may help you.

    • Winter is the best season for growing mushroom. It grow well in temp between 15-25 degree celcius.
    • If you are planning for small farm then i can suggest you winter is the best time to grow mushroom as in winter mushroom can grow naturally but in summer it needs climate controlled environment which asks for huge investment.
    • There are three different kinds of mushrooms to grow, those are button mushroom(best for cold weather), oyster mushroom(it can be grown easily in any climate), and milky  mushroom(which can be cultured in hot and humid climate where the temp is more than 30 degree celcius).

@Florin, Boletus Edulis is not a commercially grown mushroom, but is gathered, usually under pine tree canopies, South Africa has a few people who do this on a commercial scale, Europe too I believe. Bill

My message is not directed at anyone in particular, it is just that I have seen and done it, most difficult to get it right without capital and sound "hands on" advice. Advice from afar often makes it far worse unintentionally, as the inexperienced grower finds it difficult to interpret the advice, as there will always be other unseen factors contributing to the problem he is experiencing. @shahine. Suggest you find a traveling consultant who can visit regularly over a long period, build this (heavy)cost into your cash flow, partner would only be useful if he has much experience, you dont need two people who are inexperienced!! Bill Isemonger
