Open Your Own Head Shop

Are you the type of person who loves to invest in strange ventures? Well, why don't you open your own head shop?

Head shops today are quite controversial and some local groups are against it; still, if you think you can run the shop well and you have enough customers to make a living, this may be a lucrative venture.

What is a Head Shop?

Some people are still not familiar with head shops. The shops specialize in drug paraphernalia which is related to recreational drugs, counterculture art, cannabis, home decor, clothing, music, and magazines. The shop can sell items like bongs, glass pipes, roach clips, vaporizers, pipe screens, rolling machines, rolling papers, balances or scales, whipped cream chargers, incense, black-light responsive posters, and cigarette lighters.

The first head shops started way back in the 1960s. The shops were located in major cities where there is a high concentration of youths. You need to be prepared since the popularity of these shops diminished considerably with the aging generation of baby boomers. Your primary competitors would be stores offering related but eco-friendly products and alternative music.

Legality Issues for Starting Head Shop

If you live in the United States, most head shops are located in legal grey areas. You see, the store can cater to legal and illegal drugs. In some states, some drug paraphernalia is illegal while in others, it’s fine. Still, most shops argue that the drug paraphernalia they sell are legal and are intended for tobacco, herbal highs, and legal substances.

Back in the 80s, there was a nationwide movement to ban all head shops that were located near supermarkets and schools. Concerned parents were the ones who conducted the movement. Because of this, a law was passed to prohibit head shops from selling any kind of paraphernalia to minors in California. The law was able to decrease the shops.

The popularity of head shops improved by the year 2000 with the passage of law regarding medicinal marijuana; you will also see signs on the shops about the use of the products bought by customers. In the case of online head shops, the customers will need to comply with the very strict disclaimers before they can shop for the items.

Now that you know that head shops are indeed legal, you will need to decide where to hold your place of business. The location is vital and you need to consult the concerned local state or government office. Are you going to rent/lease or purchase the location and building? This is a matter of personal choice and it will depend on your capital investment. Another thing to consider is the supplier of the paraphernalia. Make sure that you purchase from reputable and legal suppliers so that you won’t violate any law. Extra care is needed in this kind of business.

Starting a smoke shop is not a easy job beside finding right product and right market but if you work properly its a gold mine, i have seen people heading straight to downtown la and buying stuff for the shop and they start but trust me if its this easy everyone would be doing that!! the selection of product is important and the uniqueness in products count beside quality & prices. Most smokers can tell you the difference between a good pipe and a bad pipe check the downtown pipes most ppl would cal it bad :( any way there are rewards for the one who do a good job its the only industry where you get more then 100% margins we are manufacturer and distributor of smoke accessories, glass pipes, bongs etc. but beside that we are also expert to look at your idea/layout and can tell you if you are going fine mail us at info@highzone.biz if you plan to open a smoke shop. apart from the supply & Shop set up we can help you getting the required license & Permit for the smoke shop mail at info@highzone.biz for further info

FIRST OF ALL.. YALL GOING TO NEED TO DO MORE THAN WANT.. GET OFF YOUR REAR END.. GET SOME MONEY TOGETHER.. @10K-15K.. THEN LOCATE A PLACE OF INTEREST IN OPENING A SHOP.. GO GET YOUR ASSUMED NAME CERTIFICATE FROM YOUR COUNTY, APPLY FOR A FEDERAL EIN#, APPLY FOR YOUR STATE BUSINESS LICENSE AND TAX #.. THEN APPLY FOR A BUSINESS LICENSE FOR THE CITY THE SHOP IS LOCATED IN.. HOPEFULLY YOU HAVE ALREADY ESTABLISHED A GOOD RELATION WITH THE MAYOR OR CHIEF OF POLICE.. CAUSE SOME CITIES WILL FROWN UPON SUCH BUSINESS.. BUT AS LONG AS YOU DONT ADVERTISE ILLEGAL USE, DONT DISPLAY ILLEGAL USE, DONT SPEAK OR WRITE ABOUT DIRECTIONS OF ILLEGAL USE, DONT HAVE IT NEAR ILLEGAL SUBSTANCES, DONT HAVE ILLEGAL SUBSTANCE RESIDUE ON ANY ITEM, AND OR DONT PLACE NEAR REFERENCES OF ILLEGAL SUBSTANCES.. OR THE ITEMS DONT HAVE REFERENCES ON THEM.. OR SELL TO ANYONE THAT TALKS ABOUT USING THE ITEMS ILLEGALLY... OR ANYONE UNDER 18 OR WHO LOOKS TO BE PREGNANT.. THEN YOUR NOT ACTUALLY IN POSSESSION OF "DRUG PARAPHERNALIA".. OR IN VIOLATION OF ANY LAWS.. UNLESS YOUR SELLING TOBACCO WITHOUT A LICENSE.. "DUMB".. YOU JUST HAVE TOBACCO PIPES AND ACCESSORIES.. OF COURSE EACH CITY AND STATE LAW IS DIFFERENT.. ALWAYS REMEMBER THE DEA OR FEDS CAN RAID AT ANYTIME.. NEVER OVERSTOCK OR KEEP ALL YOU INVENTORY ON LOCATION.. ALWAYS KEEP ADDITIONAL GOODS STORED ELSEWHERE ENCASE OF A DAY LIKE THAT.. ANYONE THATS BEEN IN BUSINESS, KNOWS WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT.. AND TO ALL YOU GUYS.. I WISH YOU THE BEST.. BUT FOR SOME OF YOU.. TOO DAMN LAZY TO INVESTIGATE WHAT IT TAKES.. OR TO TAKE TIME TO ACTUALLY PUT IN EFFORT TO DO THIS.. YOU DONT DESERVE TO DO IT.. AND OR ARE TOO STUPID TO DO SO.. AND WILL EVENTUALLY FIND YOUR SELF IN ALLOT OF TROUBLE.. CAUSE IF YOU CANT FIGURE OUT NORMAL BUSINESS APPLICATIONS.. THEN YOUR DEF NOT GOING TO FOLLOW THE FINE LINE OF THE LAW.. ALSO.. IF THERE IS ANY OTHER TYPES OF THINGS YOU WOULD PREFER TO SELL AND HAVE A MARKET FOR.. DO THAT INSTEAD.. CAUSE MOST CITIES WILL AND CAN HANG UP YOUR PROCESS FOR @ A YEAR OR MORE.. AND YOU MAY HAVE TO SEEK COUNCIL TO GET THRU THE DISCRIMINATION THAT MOST CITIES UNCONSTITUTIONALLY PUT ON YOU THUS NOT APPROVING YOUR CITY APPLICATION WITHOUT YOU HAVING A GOOD UNDERSTANDING OF THE LAW TO DEBATE.. ALSO REMEMBER.. THAT INVENTORY TAKES TIME TO COLLECT, SHIP IN, AND COST $$$.. BUY LOW.. SELL HIGH.. LOL.. YOU'LL NEED SHELVES, RACKS, CASES, REGISTERS, DESKS, COMPUTERS, AND SOME ACCOUNTING SKILLS.. AND THE LIST GOES ON.. ITS NOT CHEAP.. ITS NOT EASY.. I RECOMMEND OPENING A SPORTS STORE WITH YOUR LOCAL OF FAVORITE TEAM MERCH.. ITS MUCH EASIER FOR FIRST TIME RETAILERS..

also, pay attention to your demographic.. if you live in a below middle class area, dont stock high dollar pieces.. if you live in a major city, or middle class or above area, and or near heavily trafficked travel destinations.. you may want to put a few high dollar pieces, but keep a wide array of priced goods.. and most important.. always keep cost in mind.. operation costs are high, and sometime when starting off can get out of control.. do the work yourself.. until you get a routine in place.. and a feel for the income generated before hiring anyone.. also find a location with less than 100sqft.. as it is very costly to stock big spaces and have a good feel of inventory for customers.. try to be unique.. and never put anything in your company name that refers to illegal activities.. i wish you all the best.. this is all stuff i had to learn on my own... no help.. so consider yourself lucky.. its mostly common knowledge.. but from reading some of your questions.. i feel like this will prove very challenging for some.. lmao..
