@Horm Siphanna, @horn siphanna.one of the ways to minimize  your costs in raising shrimps is to go back to the traditional method of raising shrimps where you will just stock 3-5 shrimps per square meters. aeration is not needed. feeding and other inputs are at minimum and labor is not that intensive. the harvest is not that big but it can generate income for sure.

But how can we find a supplier of those larvaes? Thanks in advance, Best regards, Nahida
  • laurence santos beginner adviser said on November 17, 2011

sir @ldumal, i was assigned in bohol last 2006 as technician and i agree, its a nice pace to grow shrimps. however, as far as i know, panglao island is being promoted by the government to be a tourist destination so i think aquaculture ponds are not suitable on the area. try it in the mainland bohol sir. i have farms before in loay, getafe, maribojoc, etc..

mam @Nin Martinez, i know shrimps can grow in freshwater but i doubt the water quality in Laguna Lake. i suggest better to culture it in ponds where you can easily manage water parameters.

dear all, the key success factors for shrimp farming are 1.) fry or seed, 2.) feed, 3.) environment, and 4.) management. a quality fry/seed must be specific-pathogen-free, should have passed the PCR check for different viruses such as WSSV, TSV, IHHNV, etc., must be fast growing. likewise, the feeds, which is about 50-60% of your total production cost must have complete nutritional ingredients needed by the shrimps, palatable and with high stability, thus maintaining low feed conversion ratio but not compromising the growth. the environment shall focus on site selection (accessibility to the market, hatchery, water source), project design, facilities, etc. lastly, the management is the technical ability to manage the project.

farm is in brackish water located in Panganiban, Catanduanes. For a start, a two 1.5ha ponds are dedicated as grow-out ponds and, another, 1ha as a reservoir. Most part of this 4ha farm is already developed. All necessary dikes and gates have been constructed. The dikes have a 3m base by 1.5m crown & height of 2m. We are planning to put 50K fry this March. water flow is controlled by the main gate (high/low tide). Prior to buying the tiger prawn fry, we need to know the best way to fertilized the ponds. currently there are milkfish, sapsap, talakitok, tilapia etc in it. we will drain the water then poison all the scavengers. please advice the best way to tackle this. thanks

@moonville, sir there are lots of disinfectants in the market to be used to eliminate unwanted species in your monodon farm. MOST IMPORTANT thing, use multi-layered fine mesh net in your inlet to filter the water. then, use 30ppm of teased powder in low water level to eliminate the bony fishes. second, you may use trichlorfon to disinfect the water and to kill other crustaceans.

I am very interested in starting a indoor salt water shrimp farm and I think that I have figured out all the connections to make things happen the one thing that I dont see anyone ask on this blog our state/federal our country regulations? I know that In the state that I live in Wisconsin that the rules and regulation to sell to vendors or to the general public the state will have a 1000 rules and regulations and fee's will have to be paid, where do I find that to make sure I am in compliance? Lawyers are very expensive and so our start up costs!!!!

I am a young boy in South Africa and I wish to start up a shrimp tank. I have done research forever and it was not helped. I do not want to to do it commercially now but it is a possible carer choice. if I could get assistance on breeding ,information and which ones I can mix with which ones . I would greatly appreciate any advise and help from anyone .
