@Mourad, then you have your technical assistance already and it is also good to have experts doing these work for you. What else you need? Do you need assistance in company registration or hands on managing the farm? I will be more than happy to help you further.

Hi, I am from Purnia, Bihar, India and a farmer. I am interested in shrimp farming but I do not have any idea of it. How to start? I have 10 acres of agricultural land which is a bit low, and can be converted into a pond. We have rains during Monsoon only. Please suggest. Is there any possibility of shrimp farming in such a condition? A.K.Chaudhary
  • Raghunath expert adviser said on March 10, 2011
@A.K.Chaudhary, Hello A.K.Chaudhary, well environmental issues are the most important point of shrimp farming. Though shrimp farming is suitable for coastal area But it is possible anywhere now a days. It depends on your budget. you can use water pumps for sufficient water supply. Water is not the major issue, getting quality seed is a major problem. I suggest either you see the complete life cycle by working in a nearby shrimp farm or start a small one with 1-1.5 acre to do yourself and learn from the mistakes.

Hello, I am very interested in any aqua farming possible in my country, Kyrgyzstan. We have a mountain lake Issyk-kul. One businessman came from France and took back a sample of water for a test. He said it was suitable to farm Caviar fish. Is it also possible to use river water for shrimp or lobster farms? We border with China, so most of sea food comes from there and it is not fresh at all even if it is frozen. If you could give me any advice I would really appreciate it. Thanks

Hello, I am very interested in shrimp farming. I currently own 10 hectars in Colima, Mexico. My land is surrounded with a lot of sweet water and salt mines, the temperature is 95 to 105 degrees year round and the state government highly encourages this industry. Please if anyone reads this give me advice and I would really appreciate it, I feel that I am sitting on a ideal peace of land for this industry. Thanks
  • Raghunath expert adviser said on March 15, 2011
@Nawaid Akhter, Hello Nawaid Akhter, You have not mentioned upfront the exact things you want to know still here are some advices for you.
    • The most important thing is land. Site selection is major difficult part, you should check water quality, soil quality and availabilities upfront.
    • you need minimum 5 acres of land for shrimp farming
    • Prepare your pond with proper construction ides
    • You need to get juvenile shrimp from a hatchery
    • Gather all the knowledge about feeding process. You should feed them once a day till they reach 4-5grams.
    • Water circulation is very important in shrimp farming
    • finally you need a license if you plan to sell the farm shrimp. I have no idea about your area. Laws may vary from place to place.

I live in Malaysia. I am interested in starting a shrimp farm business. I am not sure about the seawater and freshwater shrimp farm benefit and profit. I need more info how to start up this shrimp farming. Please contact me : darren.leesh@gmail.com
  • Raghunath expert adviser said on April 14, 2011

@Darren Lee, Hi Darren Lee, I don't think there is much difference between freshwater and sea water shrimp farming. I think Malaysia is more popular for fresh water shrimp farming. Basically shrimp grow well in tropical climate. During the farming process you need to change the water continuously, add nutrients and pesticides to the water.. Start up cost will totally depends on the size of the farm, location and management strategy. The most common problems occur in most of the places are seed supply, disease, and external pollution.

I am currently farming two type, Pacific white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei, and tiger shrimp Penaeus monodon in Viet Nam. Each pond ( 5000 square meter ) which yield 6 ton of Penaeus monodon and 8 ton of Litopenaeus vannamei I had been doing this for the past three years and had ran into many obstacle and trial an error kind of thing, which I had overcome and perfect. Anyone who want to start this venture , email me so I can tell you things to do or look out for . khanhle@gmail.com

i am a prawn/ shrimp technician from the phillippines. i would just like to inform everybody that shrimp farming is not that easy to do.
    - first of all this business is capital and labor intensive, it needs a lot of money to start one.
    - second, shrimp farming is technically hard. you must have the knowledge to prevent failure, a simple advice online will not do it. if you dont have the knowledge then hire somebody to run it for you.
    - thirdly, a lot of factors and variables are at play that can spell success or failure in this business. this is not to discourage you people but i write this to prepare you to be successful in this business.God bless.

@carebebe. here are some general tips on pond design and layout and equipments needed in a shrimp farm.
    1. your pond must be easily drained out at harvesting time, if not the quality of your shrimps will be affected post harvest because of the delay in draining the water. check the lowest low tide and base your pond elevation on that.
    2. water supply/intakes should be far from the drain gates/canals.
    3. water inlets are made on the side of the pond where the prevailing winds comes from. this is to maximize water circulation with the help of the winds and to direct scums and dirt towards the drain gate which should be located at the far end of the direction of the prevailing wind in your area.
    4. water depth should be around 1.2 to 1.5 meters.
    5. water pumps size and capacity depends on the size of the farm. the bigger the farm the bigger the pumps too.
    6. in areas that have power/electrical stoppages, generator set is a must. this to ensure your stocks dont die when power outages occur because aerators and paddlewheels are dependent on electricity.
    7. aerators and paddlewheels for adding oxygen in the water. usually it is 2-4 paddlewheels for a ton of shrimp but it depends on the area or the quality of water.
i will be adding more suggestions.

@Hassan Bushree, we would be happy to help you start a prawn farm. if you could be more detailed in your info about your farm such as pond size and depth, water parameters(salinity,ph,etsc.)equipments available(water pumps, paddle wheels, etc.) for starters i would recommend you choose between p.monodon or the l.vannamei to culture(if any of these two types of shrimps are available in your country). These two types of shrimps are suitable in a brackish or saltwater environment. second you can select between semi intensive or intensive types of culture(this would depend on your capacity to buy farm equipments and inputs to support the cultured pecie(paddlewheels, water pumps, feeds, etc. we can clarify these things if we can communicate further. thank you

I am interested in staring a shrimp rearing operation. I have found a farm that is for sale and a stream runs through it. I want to also cultivate Tillapia fish and am interested to establish if the two species are able to co-exist. I have to build a pond and am looking to build a pond in the region of 25000 square meters. Please advise what is required, how to get started, etc. I am from South Africa, on the Kwa-Zulu Natal Eatern coast. The farm is about 40km from the coast line. There is only fresh water available. I will be able to also produce algea. Thanking you in anticipation
  • laurence santos beginner adviser said on July 6, 2011
@ravi reddy, actually both species can co exist but you will be having a problem in your feeding and feed conversion ratio of your shrimps because tilapias are voracious eaters. Your feed for the shrimps will surely be eaten by the tilapias. i would advice that if you raise them both in one pond you construct a divider of sorts to separate them.the green water system they use here use tilapia to enhance the water used by the shrimps with the slime of the tilapias.they raise the tilapia at the center and corners of the ponds seperated by constructing a divider made of screens so that the shrimp and tilapias wont mix.

Hello, I am very interested in shrimp farming. I am from Tunisia and leaving in an island called “Kerkennah” in Mediterranean sea, I have no idea about shrimp farmer but I like to invest in this project for the below reasons:
    - I think it is an ideal place as the land is adjacent to see
    - The land is for the government but I can rent it with a very low price as it is an argylesland(salty, impermeable and nothing can grow inside)
    - The land is hundreds of hectares so any extension for the future is available
    - government highly encourages project in this area to create jobs:
Assuming I prepared all necessary paper to start the project I would like to know the kind of material I should have or what I should prepare as infrastructure to understand my capability for a small farmer ( 02 hectares). Many thanks in advance for your advice
