How to Start a Golf Store

Are you a golf enthusiast? Is golfing your passion? Do you want to profit from the sport you and many others love to play? Do you think you can manage your golf store?

If you do, then here are a few tips to get you started with your golf store.

With over thirty million golfers in the United States alone, no one can seriously say that getting into the golfing business is not profitable. This is especially true now as more and more people are joining the ranks of the golfing population. Any budding entrepreneur looking to break into the golfing industry already has many businesses to choose from. From golfing ranges to golfing lessons and equipment stores, they are entering the golfing business as genuinely profitable.

If you are considering starting a golf store, here are a few things you should consider first. Any good golf store owner must have adequate knowledge of golf as a sport. He must at least be able to play golf and be familiar with the needs of a golf player. This way, he knows what goes on inside the potential customer’s mind and would be better equipped to answer the golfer’s needs. It is also a must that a golf storeowner be very familiar with the varying golf equipment and accessories that are out in the market today. It is, therefore, the first step for any entrepreneur to gain knowledge about the golfing industry.

The Golf Store Business Plan

After getting acquainted with the basics of golf and golfing equipment, an entrepreneur must start planning the golf store. Since an entrepreneur starts a business to earn profits, it is essential to make goals and projections for the company. Bear in mind that in starting a golf store, 89% of your golf store would turn in as gross revenue would go to the expenses of the golf store. That means that the profit margin of the golf store would only be around 11%. It is also essential to know what your golf store would be selling. Golf equipment varies; a golf store owner can focus on only one or some of the equipment. You can only focus on golf clubs and offer brand-new and old ones. You can also choose to focus on golfing apparel and accessories. Whatever you choose depends on your expertise and overall goal for your golf store.

For all who are thinking of opening a golf store be careful. I have worked at golf stores and courses for 20 years and it is a tough business. The peak of golf was 1986 and has been on a decline since. The number of off course golf stores has dropped by over 50% since 1986. The margins suck.
