How to Start Your Own Event Planner Business

Summary: Two of the things you would need in order to start your own event planner business includes: building yourself an army of dependable contacts and acquainting yourself with the different types of events.

An event planner sounds like a very glamorous sounding job – and it is in some ways.

You get to meet lots of interesting people, you get to go to great places (some of them exotic), and you always get to party, party, party. In fact, the popular term now is party planner – and it seems that everyone wants to be one. However, it should be noted that an event planning business needs a lot of preparatory work and a lot of contacts to deal with. You also need to keep a level head during times of duress and you should be able to maintain your cool when dealing with a difficult client. Most importantly, you need to show your clients why your services are far better than the host of event planners out there.

Aside from stoking the embers of your creative prowess, you need to really build for yourself an army of dependable contacts if you really want to start your own event planning business. Your party planning ideas will only run a short course if you do not have people to back you up.

You need a number of reliable companies for party supplies, for one thing (tables, chairs, balloon makers, party décors, etc.) You would also need an army of bakers, caterers, booking agents, florists, limo drivers and providers, suits and dress makers – the whole lot of possible providers of a great party, and there are a lot. You also need to establish a good working relationship with these people you are to work with, so that you can get discounts on bulk deals. At the same time, you know just how dependable these companies can be. In case that there is the inevitable failing, you need to know which of these companies or individuals can come through for you in a pinch.

Believe me, you just might find yourself in a life and death situation if you have to explain to a worried bride on her wedding day why the white freesias she ordered is replaced by yellow daisies, why her limo driver got lost on the way to church and why her wedding cake has not arrived yet.

Types of Events

Speaking of brides, you may want acquaint yourself with all sorts of possible events that you might want to prepare for. After all, an event planner should be ready to face any challenge with creative determination. Sure enough, different events need different planning, though there will always be the essentials to contend with like food, wine, locations and contingency measures (Plan B, Plan C, Plan D, etc. in case things do not work out as planned.).

Some of the things you should prepare for include: birthday planning, conference planning, corporate event planning, meeting planning, unusual events planning (romantic dinner set up for kids for their parents,) special events planning (club anniversary, launching of company products), wedding planning, and plain simple party planning for whatever purpose.
