We have a fully ready shop at home. Need to know legal details of opening an auto body shop. (zoning, osha, tax ID, business license, state safety regulations), how/if we can obtain insurance work, how to protect our family assets/savings from the business, business suppliers (estimate forms). We will not have any 'employees', it will be family run. Would like to try to pull off starting this up without a loan. Concerns about being in residential neighborhood.

If you guys want to open a shop, get involved in your local auto body organization. The people who fight for body shop labor rates and regulations are the same people who can help you establish a body shop with all the proper insurances. They will inform you on all the regulations and inspections you will be receiving.

Now-a-days, having a good reputation and doing quality work get you nowhere. You need to have multiple insurance companies and fast working employees. Factor in your operating cost for the month alone and figure if you really want to open a body shop. With the economy in the state it is in right now, people do not have the extra money to repair a scratch or ding, so all your work will most likely be from insurance companies. I would advise everyone in here to work in a body shop before jumping into one. You really need to love this work to own a shop, because it will 90% of the time never make you rich.
