Tracy California- I am very interested in opening up a home for seniors, and/or a daycare. How would I know where to find information on supply and demand? Or, how seniors would pay home a assisted living home or board and care home? I know that adult day health care centers are closing everywhere because the government won't fund them anymore, so I think the need is there for board and care homes, I just need help with marketing, and getting placements, etc. Thanks so much for your help!

Hello. I have been interested for years to start an Adult Day Program for a specific group of population. I am very passionate about the adult population and in hope to provide the best support I can for them. I live in Merced, California. I'm not quite sure how I would go about to start this kind of business. I want the program to be a Medical and Social program. Funding is very important and I need help in this area as well. I appreciate if you would provide a checklist or any information possible to get this program started. Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

  • Andy Fajardo said on February 13, 2012
Hi Lilian, I was trying to reach you by your email, unfortunately so far I have not received any answer, maybe you can do it on this blog. The fact is that I was doing research of how to start up my own ADCC in Tampa, and I read your professional interventions in a blog. I don't know why there are much less ADCC here compared to Miami and the most are owned by the county, so I don't know if it worth it to start this business here. So far I have not found an experienced consultant in the area who could lead me, and when I contacted one, he advised me to apply for an ALF license and I'd be allowed to have the ADCC in it, when I'm not interested in having an ALF, but I think it was because he was trained in starting up that kind of business only. That's why when I saw your experience I thought about your company, but first I'd like to know if I can have it in my own house which is wide enough in relation to the required sqft that I think is 45 per participant because I don't have enough money to waste in case It won't work out. Thank you so much. I'm looking forward to hearing from you. Sincerely Andy
  • Lilian Bello expert adviser said on February 14, 2012
Hi Andy! I have not received any emails from you unfortunately. We would have to first find out which city you wish to start it. AHCA does not care whether you use a house or not. However, your city regulations do determine and guide how you can set up the day care. For instance, in Miami, if you use a commercial address, then you are allowed to follow the 45sq. ft. per participant rule; but if you use a residential address, then you have to go by what the city regulations say for an ALF, even though you'd be licensed as an ADCC, which is 6 participants. This makes no sense, but it is the zoning guidelines for the city of Miami unfortunately. So we would have to find out what your local city guidelines say in regards to zoning for a residential ADCC first. If the city does not get involved, then we can definitely move forward with your house. Just let me know which part of Tampa you are looking at. Feel free to call me and let me know Andy (305) 492-5308.

@Tameka, Hi Tameka, yes, you definitely have to have a facility set up prior to submitting paperwork for licensure. You also have to have policies and procedures, forms, an emergency management plan, fire inspection, etc. Feel free to give us a call and we'll gladly help you through the process.

Dear Sir: My husband and I purchasing a home in the Clearwater area. We are thinking of making that our home as well as an adult day care and run it initially together. We believe it is best to start small and take in no more than four elderly folks initially. Ultimately, when we learn the business, we would like to broaden our project and open an ALF facility at another location to house up to 12 people with proper staffing and our management. But - first things first, what course work do we need to take in order to start a day care for 4-6 elderly individuals AND what type of licensing do we need for this start up of a small day care? Do I need a core administrator course for a day care. If not, what initial training? Also, what can we charge (per the area)? Could our guests obtain assistance with payment of this service? Can grants or assistance be obtained for this?

I wish to open and operate an Adult Care Day Camp in my home in Grand Rapids, MI. I wish to take 4-6 clients during start-up. The clients would need to eligible for assistant living benefits through medicaid, medicare or private insurance/retirement benefits. The adults day camp will be geared towards those seniors or veterans who require assistant living environment, or at home who require a level of care. This will allow adults who are caring for elderly relative to drop off the parent for day care while they are at work or as needed. Services offered: Food, physical therapy, physical and social activities, general care, and transportation to doctors office. I have requested information from Michigan government to determine licensure process. I would like any more information you could prove about the license and the license and process to open an adult day camp for seniors and veterans in Michigan. Is there a contact person or coordinator that you could refer me to? If so, please provide phone number and email. What are the specific licenses needed other than the business license? What is the process for gaining a license? What specific training must I have to conduct this operation by law? What types of employees are required?

I am far away from the country mentioned in above communication. I am writing this from Nepal, a mountainous developing country in the foothill of Himalayas. Here our emerging problem (common to many developing countries) is that ageing population are increasing and youth are migrating abroad for study and / or job and back home no one to take care of elderly population. Me and a group of my friends are thinking of setting up an old age care center, starting from a day care. I wish to obtain a checklist for me to go ahead. I am a medical doctor so it may be bonus for me to take up this initiative. Please advice on my email address

Hi I am currently located in Moreno Valley, California and I am interested in gaining information on opening an senior daycare facility. I am currently and have in the last 15 years worked with developmental disabled women as well as children. My mother is in the early stage alzheimer, between caring for my mother and trying to hold down a full time job is a lot of work. So with that being said I thought about opening an adult daycare to make life a little easier for the adult children who are caring for their aging parents. I need information on classes and any other information that will help me get started.

@Linda Page, Moreno Valley, Ca Some places in California are starting adult day cares and some are not. Contact your local area agency on aging to see if they are opening them up in your area. Or contact the state health department where the adult day care department is and see of they have a list of where you can start it.

My name is Ismahan and I am actually interested in starting an Adult Day Health Care center for elderly east african and Muslim community in San Diego CA but I was informed that there was a moratorium. Would there be a possibility to have Medical patients rather than just private?
