  • Raghunath expert adviser said on March 1, 2011
@sandeep, In india it is always advisable to build the solar farm near to a substation and grid to save costs of laying a new power line. It would be better if you will choose a land near to paved road and availability of water should be good. I think 12-15sqm of land is good to produce 1kw of solar power. The important component of a solar farm is solar cell which costs around 60-70% of the total investment. Setting up a solar farm cost around 15-17 crores per megawatt.

Hi I am from Karnataka, India. Wanted to know more about the process, cost, kind of infrastructure needed to set a 3-5MW Solar Farm in Karnataka. Would be inclined to know as to the time frame for Break Even and the kind of lease agreement one needs to be prepared for such long term projects. May be also the kind of partnership and Joint venture one can work towards.

Hello. I am looking to start up a 2MW Farm in the state of Vermont with land near a local sub station that I own. I am looking for guidance on funds and system requirements.
  • Raghunath expert adviser said on March 18, 2011
@K.Moore, Hello K.Moore, Well starting a solar farm is pretty expensive it will cost you at least Rs.40,000,000 or 4 crore rupees.
    • For generating the power you need Silicon solar panels.
    • You need mounting supports for keeping your panels off from the ground and face it to sun.
    • You also need power electronics to convert from DC to AC.
    • To transform the power you need a substation.

@Raghunath, thanks for putting up this post coz lot of people are thinking that have 20 -50 lacs and they can start a solar farm house or a manufacturing facility which not the case. Starting up a solar business is pretty expensive. Subsidy is one of the things they always say that government is giving subsidy on it but it is again upto certain extent and while starting a business government or banks they go through the last 5-10yrs financials so while starting to think to get in to these please sure that you have all these things along with you.

FOR THOSE WANTING TO MANUFACTURE SOLAR PANELS onsite wherever you are installing the solar farms, saving $250,000 per megawatt of solar farm costs, we have a 100% U.S. made solar module manufacturing line for sale, able to make 1 or 2 megawatts per month (1 MW per shift) of large (up to 280 watt size) solar panels. Selling for $389,000. Can also provide 100% U.S. made mono or poly solar cells to make your panels with. You can easily make UL/ETL listed solar panels for a lot less $ than they cost to buy, saving millions of $$ on the cost of your multi-megawatt solar farm, thereby making it a profitable venture a lot sooner. jaysenergy@gmail.com, or Phone 1.530.303.3260

Presently own 2 farms on the Eastern Shore of Maryland one has 169 acres and the other is approx. 52 acres. One farm is located near the bay where more than likely the wind farmed energy once harnessed from the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Ocean City, MD will possibly be in the direct path to be used as one of the six entries to come into land (1 - entry will definitely be in Worcester County both farms are located in this county). Truly I am interested in the possibility of Solar and or Wind Farming. Too, I teach at the University of Maryland, E.S. and am quite impressed by the Solar Farm on campus. Snow Hill, MD 21863

I own 60+ acres near Indiana, PA. Can you advise me on the feasibility of using approx. 5-7 acres of it for solar farming with the idea of selling power in that locality? To whom would I make inquiries in that area? Thank you.

I have a few properties, but the most viable, I think, is a 5 acre flat parcel with power lines on site, blvd frontage but on the outskirts of town. Sunshine is year round. It is in Los Angeles County in the Palmdale area.
