Start a Livestock Farm

The trend of livestock farms is common nowadays. Animal lovers enjoy them by closely observing livestock animals in such farming. A livestock farm can be initiated for any of the animals whether they are donkeys, mules, rabbits, and something else. Your farm turns unique if bees are raised there for producing honey.

Similarly your livestock farm can also have enough fish ? fish farms are too common these days.

An attempt made to start a livestock farm augurs you think out of the box. You have to be particular about the purpose of your farm and making it more usable as a business venture. Whenever you talk of livestock you can’t ignore beef cattle, hogs/pigs, goats, sheep, and horses, etc. Equally important are cows that prove useful for getting milk or beef. Your livestock farm accommodates profitable dairy farms. It is also best suitable for poultry farming.

Why Livestock?

Although any type of animal can be accommodated in livestock farms some are deliberately kept out of this list and are incorporated in other categories. You must follow a specific approach when starting a livestock farm. The purpose is to make such farming a well-planned step so that its output remains lucrative and you get a chance to spread it sooner or later. Preparing herds of animals by taking concrete action on the basis of the specific characteristic of animals is amazing. Of course, studying livestock farming deeply before attempting is the best option.

Purpose and Rewards

There are numerous options for getting rewarded if livestock farming is done meticulously. You must understand selective breeding features. Understanding the nature and type of animals is crucial for making livestock farms successful. You can’t completely rely on workers. Having basic information and understanding various options for cattle production keeps you on the safer side. Think of benefits general masses have from livestock by putting yourself at their place while starting your farm. As a livestock farm owner, you enjoy many things. It is an attempt to produce meat, eggs, and milk – initiating a business venture that has a growth perspective.

Major Uses

Though there is no end of uses and benefits of livestock farming major ones are using skins and hair of several animals to prepare household items besides procuring nutrients. Many of these livestock organs are best used to prepare medicines like their use in insulin or other medicine manufacturing. Buttons, combs, glues, and knives we use as daily items are prepared from hoofs and horns that come from the livestock farms.

Successful Farmer

You can’t become a successful livestock farmer if don’t have the skill to solve problems. Grazing and feeding animals adequately are one important factors. Farmers concentrating on such aspects would turn livestock farms successful. You should also be capable to manage the whole stuff without creating an uproar. Preparing a team of competent workers and proper guidance would turn a livestock farm productive.

interested in starting a new business revolved around agriculture. We currently have horses and have for years and want to know what would be the best program to either develop further into horses or anything else.... We heard over the weekend that if we would upgrade our farm tractor that there is a benefit on our taxes and we would like to know about this as well to decide what the benefits would be to upgrade this tractor. We also have an opportunity to purchase next door 10 more acres which would provide us with 20 acres total if we purchase and we want to be smart about this purchase as this is our future and they want top dollar for the land and 1 bedroom home, approx $110k and the appraisal came in at 90k. HELP! MANY THOUGHTS NEED SOME GREAT IDEAS.

  • Raghunath expert adviser said on March 1, 2011
@apim noel, If you are planing to get into the livestock farming you should look into the need of each animal type and also the area laws for livestock. When we talk about livestock we include goat, sheep, horses, cows, chicken and other types of animals. If you are planning to start in a big scale you can keep some large animals like horse, cows because these are quite expensive or if your budget is low you can start with chicken, sheep, goat etc. Before starting the farm you need to decide about land, building and budget.

Before starting a livestock farm, certain factors need to put in consideration. You don't just dabble into it, it requires adequate knowledge, skills/man power among others. To start with, land availability, capital, market availability for your target product, e.t.c I'll advise you start with as little stock as possible, get foundation stock from a good source (the quality of your foundation stock determines the success of your livestock enterprise to a great extent) check records, observe the animals & quarantine for 30days with adequate medication and vaccination programme to ensure you're bringing in disease free animals to start up with. Also note that, feeding takes up to 70% of the cost of production in livestock farming hence the need for adequate feed/nutrition availability and procurement.

Livestock farming is a good business if you plan your journey very well. You must know what you want to do, you must also have serious interest in it and the rest will come to you. I started cattle farming some years back and today am proud of what I have achieved. we do what they call cow calf operation, what it means is that every cow on your farm must give you a calf every year otherwise she will be culled. We have over 15 cattle hands on the farm and we feed our cattle supplementary feed before going for grazing. In Nigeria today, banks are willing to support farmers if you have a good feasibility report. Remember you should also have started with some equity on the farm. Cattle farming should be taking to the next step, our meat taste a lot better than most cattle seen around. We also do crossbreeding, thereby improving the genetics of our herd. Over 50% of our herd animals are crossbred. We use Texas longhorn and Beefmaster breed. It is a business I want to encourage more people to participate in. Wish you good luck. My telephone is 08087181212 if you want any advice whatsoever.

would like get finance to start breeding cattle, sheep and goats for meat in the rural Bushbuckridge area, I would start using communal land for grazing that I have identified is enough though I might also use surplus during winter for feeding, I would like to grow to a point where I can have an abattoir and a farm butchery/meat wholesale.

I am a farmer who is struggling to establish a small size cow raising farm. I need a help to enable me carry on this farming to my village. I have started already with the site preparation and transplanting of grass that are eatable to cows. I have few cows that I want to transfer to the farm after completion. I need support like written guidelines on cows raising, fence wire and financial support. I have five cows which I am planning to add on to after preparing the farm.
