Some Barbie, Disney Toys Have High Lead Content

Some models of Barbie and Disney toys have been found to have high level of lead, a health advocacy group showed on Tuesday.

According to the group, the high-level lead content of the said toys can caused irreversible brain damage to children, urging the parents to know what they are buying for their kids.

A California-based health advocacy group on Tuesday released a new study showing children’s toys, particularly those carrying the Disney and Barbie logos, contained high levels of toxic lead chemical.

At the same time, the Center for Environmental Health has warned the public from buying these products, saying that high lead contents to such toys can cause irreversible brain damage to the children.Based on the findings, some 250 children’s toys and other products that can be seen at major stores in the US was found with high lead levels, which has surpassed the set limit of the federal government.

Popular children’s toys like Disney’s Tinkerbell Water Lily necklace, Dora the Explorer Activity Tote, and Barbie Bike Flair Accessory were among those tested positive for high lead contents. Two kinds of children’s shoes, boys’ belts, and poncho for kids were also did not pass the test.

For their part, California Attorney General Jerry Brown said that they have already sent letter to retail stores like Target and Wal-Mart informing them about the results of the test. The official has also asked the stores to immediately pullout the products that did not pass the lead test.

The product safety law was passed by Congress a year earlier in a bid to ensure the safety of children aged 12 years old and younger. The legislation has stemmed from a Mattel-related case where some 2 million toys have been pulled out from the shelves due to high lead content.
