How to Start a Baby Retail Store
Babies are delightful creatures and the things they need are just as cute. If you are fond of baby things and would like to run a business selling them, we can give you some tips on how to do it.
And so read on, and learn the basics about starting a baby supply store.
If you love baby things and would want to run a store selling them, here are some tips in starting your business:
- If possible, get experience in retail by working for a retailer for a few months or so.
- Plan extensively for your store, for one, by visiting shops whose format is similar to that you envision to own. Take note of what works and what don’t according to your observations. Don’t forget to put ideas you came up with in writing so you can better organize them in a business plan later. The planning alone could take you months.
- Decide on what kind of store you want to run. Will it be a one-stop store or a specialized one? Will you offer everything – bath, bedding, feeding, travel accessories, furniture, toys or will you specialize in any of these? Will it carry high-end products or cater to mass consumers?
- Look for a location suited to the kind of baby store you want to put up. If you want to run a boutique or a high-end shop, situate your shop where your target customers would feel comfortable going, in a mall or an independent building. If you want to set it up downtown, situate it where it will be most accessible to as many shoppers of baby things as possible.
- Scout for manufacturers and suppliers from whom you can get supplies. There are several ways to do this. One is to go to stores and look up for the brands of the merchandise you want to carry. Then you can look for the contact information of the manufacturer in the internet and directories. You can also find names of baby manufacturers and wholesalers in trade publications. When you have their contact information, you can give them a call so you can meet with one of their representatives.
- Accomplish the paperwork necessary to set up your store. Register your business name, get a license and tax identification number. Enter into a lease with store space owners. Enter into contracts with your chosen suppliers.
- Refurbish your store to create an ambiance that would encourage your target customers to shop in your store. Choose the wall paper, carpet, lighting and decor that would convey the atmosphere you want for your store. Arrange display cases and merchandise in a visually appealing manner.
- Put much effort in marketing your store. Distribute flyers and brochures. Announce your grand opening. Continue your marketing campaign even after you have opened your doors to customers.
