How to Make Money Becoming a Math Instructor

Teaching math is not only an honorable but a profitable career for anyone who has zealousness for mathematics, teaching, and helping young people. It is not too hard to know you have all these qualities. As early as grade school, the love for numbers begins to surface.

Other fields may be pursued but a person who has a heart for teaching math and helping others is ideal to be a math instructor.

Importance of Math

Every student, regardless of the level has to go through a couple of math subjects. From grade school down to post graduate studies, mathematics is always there. The specialization of math subjects, however, begins as students enter high school. The teacher is the person responsible for instructing specialized mathematics such as algebra, geometry, calculus, and trigonometry. These subjects are also repeatedly and more deeply discussed in college. The math instructor uses several teaching techniques to enable each student to understand and apply the different mathematical concepts. The instructor also has to develop lesson plans, formulate examinations, grade assignments and projects, and enforce classroom rules to help the students not only with math but also with life, in general.

Instructing Math

In the United States, a person may become a certified math teacher by obtaining a degree through an approved teacher education program including supervised student teaching experience. A math teacher has to gain licensure in the state in which he or she desires to teach or obtain an alternate certification. The different colleges or universities may be contacted about their teacher education programs should you be decided to attend. It is important to look for programs that require a prescribed number of subject and education credits. The requirements for state licensure depend on the educational level or levels you intend to teach. In addition, the licensure requirements vary from one state to another. The State Board of Education officially grants licensure.

Another important factor is your ability to work well with young students. It is beneficial to gain experience working with the youth, particularly teenagers to help you prepare to become a math instructor. One of the ways to gain experience is to volunteer at your local school and becoming a teacher’s aide or math tutor. It is also important to be a well-rounded individual. After all, a young person’s life is not all bout mathematics. Try to reach out to young people and lead them in engaging worthwhile activities. Math can be inserted in various activities, if you just try to be creative and resourceful. Many students find math subjects hard and confusing. But if you go out of your way to helping adolescents, it would not be difficult to allow them to love, or at least learn, mathematics.

Of course, teaching math pays off dearly. It is not only a source of fulfillment but also a good way to earn. According to a report by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics in 2006, the average annual salary for teachers is around $43,580 to $48,690.
