Coriander Farming

If you want to start coriander farming, you will need to learn the basics of growing this plant. Like other herbs, coriander needs a lot of sun and the region where you live is a very important factor.

It is possible to earn money from growing coriander as long you know how to plant them properly.

Growing Coriander for Money

There are many ways to earn money and did you know that you can earn some good money from your very own backyard? This is true and one way to achieve this goal is through coriander farming. Growing coriander for money is possible as long as you know the steps. The coriander is a dry seed and the native leaves are called cilantro in the Mediterranean. This plant is best suited in the zone 3 of USDA. It will surely thrive in cool damp springs and in dry hot summers. What are the things that you will need in growing coriander?

Among the things that you will need are bypass pruners, fertilizers, compost makers, trowels, spades, mulch, potting soil, planting containers, and seeds. Pick an area in your garden where there is a lot of sun. Most herbs need a lot of sun and this is also true when growing coriander for money! The plant is not fussy when it comes to the soil’s pH but you will have to pick a soil that is well drained. Providing compost is necessary as well. Once you plant the coriander, a deep taproot will develop and so it will not do well with transplanting. For this reason, you need to plant the coriander in the right place.

Planting Coriander and Harvesting

It’s best to plant coriander in spring when there is no more frost. You can sow the coriander seeds at last 1/2” deep. Thin the plants as soon as they emerge and make sure that each plant is four inches apart. To preserve moisture, mulch the plants. This is also good for deterring weeds. You need to ensure that young coriander plants don’t dry out but once the plants are established, it will require little water. If you want to get a constant supply of leaves, you have to sow succession crops every 3 weeks. You can do this until the late summer.

If you are planning to harvest the leaves only, you can harvest them when the plant is already 6 inches tall. For those who want to harvest and sell seeds, you will have to wait until late summer or in the earlier months of autumn. This is the time when the seeds begin to ripen. You can cut the plants and hang them to dry and get the seeds. If you prefer growing coriander in pots, choose a container that is at least 12” deep. Whether you plant coriander in pots or directly on the ground, you can harvest many leaves and seeds with the right planting strategies.
