Starting a Shop Fitting Business

Starting a shop fitting business entails an extensive background on various businesses and what one business may need in a limited space. It is also a very pricey business endeavor. If you are starting this business on a smaller scale, you may want to accumulate a network of suppliers to which you can get great offers without sacrificing quality.

Shop fitting is a business of merging work space specifications and personal tastes.

It is also a merging of effectively and comfort. You can even look at it as interior designing and decorating of a business space. Shop fitting should answer all your markets’ specifications: from flooring or carpeting, to counters, to wall designs and individual work spaces. If necessary, the installation of equipments needed for everyday work may also become part of the bargain.

Starting a shop fitting business would entail an extensive background on various businesses and what one business may need in a limited space. The business owner’s personal preferences are also taken into consideration. Some shop fitting businesses have prospered greatly when they decided to specialize in only one field: like restaurants only, or hostels only, etc. This however, limits your potential market exponentially. Before starting this business, you may want to consider first whether your shop fitting business can accommodate various businesses or only one field of business.

For discussion purposes, we will take a restaurant as an example for shop fitting. Dimension of the actual space is taken into account. Also, an extensive knowledge of restaurant needs is needed. An Italian restaurant will of course be very different from a Japanese inspired restaurant. A restaurant that offers party hosting and take outs will have different needs from an up-class dinner restaurant. A 70’s inspired restaurant will have different specifications from a sleek coffee-house like restaurant.

In any event, there are still standards to follow. The food preparation area should pass health standards (with regards to the number of coolers, cooking equipments like grill, etc.) as with city or local government standards regarding kitchens and the kitchens’ disposal units. The public areas like the dining room and the store façade are also taken into account. A unique “theme” or concept for the restaurant may entice potential customers – but comfort, ease of use and serviceability also goes a long way.

Starting a shop fitting business is a pricey business endeavor. Some such businesses make their own carpentry or produce their own fixtures, or supply their own carpeting and tile works. Others, to ensure that their work is purely original and will not be repeated in any other store, sell the rights to their creations to their patrons.

If you are starting this business on a smaller scale, you may want to accumulate a network of suppliers to which you can get great offers without sacrificing quality. With this set-up, not only do you play the “interior designer” role, but you also act as a contractor between business owners and suppliers. The one drawback to this arrangement is that you do not have control over your suppliers, and what they can offer you in a limited amount of time. The best you can do is to steer the (for example) restaurant owners into a list of what you can offer, or rather, what your suppliers can offer.

Not every specification that the restaurant owners want can be met in this arrangement, and basically, it’s your job to make things to work.
