Hi, i am radha from chickaballapur dis (house wife). I have 3 acres of land. I am planning to start sheep farming(non-grazing method). I would like to know if there is any other method of feeding other than silage method? I am looking for financial support from bank, kindly advice. Thank you.
  • Raghunath expert adviser said on March 5, 2011
@radha, how are you doing? I really appreciate your idea for starting a business. Feed for lamb are usually hay, pasture, urea and grain. BTW what is the breed type you are choosing for your farm? I think different breed of lamb needs different feed so need to choose your breed first. Here you can get some more feeding ideas of lamb http://pubs.ext.vt.edu/410/410-853/410-853.html. Let me know if I can serve you more.

hi, this is mohammed abdul samad from hyderabad, india i want to start a sheep/goat farm. i don't have any knowledge about this sector, i need your valuable advice and guidelines to start a farm. i want to know what are the basic infrastructure required at the starting. i will be very thankful if you kindly guide me.
  • Raghunath expert adviser said on March 11, 2011
@Mohammed Abdul Samad., Hello Mohammed, goat and sheep require almost same space to grow. 50 sqft space is enough for one sheep. You need to decide your budget so that you will know how many sheeps that you can grow with the amount. For food and disease it is better to take a short course if you are serious about this business. If you need more information about goat you can clarify some of your doubts on best breed of goat, goat food, price, etc from this article.

  • Syed Mustafa Hussain Razvi expert adviser said on August 5, 2011

@SYED MASOOD, Dear Masood Bhai, please decide whether you want to go for fatenning the kids scheme or breeding scheme. you have to make the shed about 750 sq ft for 50 animals. initially start with leaves / hay / asbestos shed which will cost of around 20-25000 after getting experience you plan further. before starting this business take training sir and meet local vet. in hyderabad there are very few stall feed farms and mostly farmers do grazing so if you buy kids you can feed them in stall or in your farm open area by growing lucerne, stylo, maize, bajra and other fodders. if you buy 5-6 months old from sheep farmers who do grazing  you  have to send them for grazing in near by areas

I have already constructed a shed measuring 35 * 70 (Approx). Land is little salty. Though soil water is sweet and canal water is also available. Since i dint used this land for cultivation so gives a barren look. I want to make it useful land for all kind of cultivation, particularly for vegetable growing plus any profitable live stock, poultry farming. Here i mention that my Farm is without electricity. I would appreciate some valuable idea to start some small business with as little investment as possible. Thanks

Dear Samuel, its very good to start Meat Processing plant but it you need Millons of Dollars to spend on it. with out doing complete research and Consultation with Consultant dont do. initially you have to search for the buyers, catch the orders and another thing there will be risk if you dont get continue supply of Carcass from the supplier. You can get cheap meat from Somalia.

@naveen ale, For 1000 Sheep you need 35-40 Acre of Land if you want to grow fodder and make them fat in short time. Sheeps are suitable for semi intensive and extensive farming but if they are feed from young age at stall farms it can also be useful. You can go for either Deccani or Nellore Jodpi. we can supply you Project Report on Sheep Fattening Scheme and also can supply 5-6 Months old Rams or Mature Females

  • Syed Mustafa Hussain Razvi expert adviser said on September 2, 2011

@Srinivas reddy, Go for Deccani or Nellore Jodpei or Brown. please confirm by yourself whether you want  to do breeding or fattening Scheme. you have to grow various fodders like Maize, jawar, subabu, Lucerne, Hybrid Napier and send the Sheeps for Grazing also.

it is recommend you to do semi stall feeding( stall feeding +  0nly 3 hours Natural Grazing) because the  breeding animals  will get good exercise, they will active for mating and the fodder from the land can also be saved to some extent which can lead to reduction in Running Cost. For 200 sheeps you need 8 Acre of Land
