i'd like to share my experience farming/raising fish in pond's or in land. my place is in the north of Bandung, west java, Indonesia. start with catfish, it's cross breed catfish, the africanxlocal catfish. it's called "lele sangkuriang", this catfish FCR (feed conversion ratio) is 1:1, means that every kilo's food you give convert to one kilo of fish you'll take. this catfish habit's are more calm than the african's or our local catfishes, and also grow's 30% faster. you can raise them in a very small pond's like 4m X 2m plastic pond, and you can spread about 2000 small catfish like 3-5cm long baby's to the pond. to feed them, first you must know how much catfish you put in the pond, or measure it by the volume, if it's about 5 kilo's, so the amount of food you must give is 5% from the total volume of the fish, and it must be about 250grams, find smaller size of food or try to use egg yolk and mashed it with water and mix with a little like 100gram of well grinned rice hull/sundried chicken manure. you could do this for about 6 day's. after the fish reach about 7-9cm long or about 10-11grams each, you must feed them 3 time's a day. using food's that fits on their mouth size, and food's must contain 30% protein minimum...if you do this and strongly aware for the fishes condition's, so you're able to see them bigger and ready to harvest in about 50 day's. the usage's of certain amount of probiotic's might help reach the good pond condition. when you feel that you're success enough to raise catfish with this method, so that you're able to handle other kind's of fish like tilapia, etc.

i will advise farmers to feed their fish the whole feed for the day and should be done once. Your catfish will convert the feed to body weight than feeding thrice or twice a day. It will also reduce feed wastage.

@lateef is it earthen or concrete pond? Cos the cost is varies. Can only give you the rough estimate on earthen for ur 5000 fingerlings to table size.., 1 fish will eat the ratio of 0.65kg feed to table which will multiply by 5000 catfish then divide it by 15kg which is a standard weight of 1bag of coopens feed. Almost N1,126.666 only on feeding.

From my own professional point of view, the best thing to do before investing in aquaculture is to know the technical-know-how and which you can never get from reading any manure or attending millions of seminars or calling anybody on phone. There two ways you can acquire informal skill in aquaculture which is either you go and learn it from a well functioning farm or you call for the expert to set up a farm for which must be managed by him for at least a production season in your presence. With only this you can get a productive skill. Our company can do any of these for you.

Quite interesting many comments on post nevertheless my piece as fish farmer and a sales executive of floating feeds for over six years is first for intending farmers it is safer and best if you master the business with an experienced farmer @ least for four months. It would enable you to understand the technicality and so much more. This four months will guide your final decision believe me. Second for existing farmers, put pride and money aside, get a good consultant that runs a farm not managers or middlemen, your story will change for good. 08077523538

Most interestingly I have met with fish farmers who complain about losing thousand and even millions of of naira in fish farming,I was once a victim. Before embarking on a this business you must bring in a good consultant who knows the basic rudiment of aquaculture thereby learning from him or her after your first harvest. Don't be deceived fish farming a a very risky business u may end up wasting time and your money. Call me on 08061682047 for further briefing.

@Ramsey.Good to know u ve started but I need to understand..re u working for someone on a farm or the farm is yours? Anyway to become a self employed fish farmer entails few steps. Once you can address each steps, then you're on your to become an independent employee.

@Osa-ogie, a.Personally, I rarely medicate my fish except for pond treatment. If indeed you re interested in this area of catfish value chain, I will advise u major on feeds and tools. They are major necessity for fish and the farmer. Visit fish stores for more inquiries.
