Having owned two bridal stores, I feel I can speak with experience. First off, I would suggest that anyone thinking of opening a shop consider getting the bridal industry magazine called "Vows" It will lead you to reliable companies that sell gowns, etc. There are two seasons in the bridal industry and in each season you are required to buy at least a minimum number of gowns. I suggest getting in many sizes as samples, there is nothing worse than a size 16 bride trying on a size 8 gown. It just does not work. also remember that in the USA the gown sizes are based on european sizes, so a bride in the USA who normally wears a size 6, will have to order a size 10 in order that the gown will fit her. And also does the town/city zoning laws permit you to have a business in your home? Well, that is enough for now. Good luck everyone!

I would not mind ordering from these companies because they have great wholesale prices, but I am hearing tons of horror stories about ordering from these companies and the shipping cost is sometimes more than the dress! Can someone please help me find where i can purchase good quality and affordable bridal and bridesmaid gowns? Thanks perfectloveis@hotmail.com

My family in Philippines will open a "Homebased" on line bridal boutique both rental and sales. I acquired most of my 15 wedding dress and 45 tuxedo's at $ 25 a piece(used only once) from different thrift store in United States. Most of this wedding dress and tuxedo's are from $700 to $ 1,500 and $ 500 to $ 700 brandnew. I will contract most of my alteration to an experience dress maker and tailor in a small town who don't have a lot of customers. Most of the rental is @ $ 250/dress including tuxedo for the groom w/ free bridal sponsors including shoes .I will add free rental for the bride and groom parents including shoes as a bonus. I will turn around my 15 wedding dress and 45 tuxedo's 12 times a year @ 75 weddings. I will add 25 made to order class wedding dress and 45 made to order tuxedo's from the manufacturer as my back up in case they want a brandnew set. My target area is @ 250 to 1,000 weddings per year. I will also encourage newly wed who has a wedding dress and tuxedo's for consignment if they want to make extra income.I will upgrade all my wedding dress and tuxedo to the current year to follow the trend of the young generation.I plan to expand the boutique to 50 homebased business owned by independent homeowner in the Philippines in the next 2-3 years. All you need is a good business plan and small capital and make sure your home-based boutique look very professional and a very good website. For those who want capital, micro lending is the way to go for your start-up.They will help you for your business plan.

just a small suggestion if i may, in regards to operating a bridal shop, remember to follow an honest guideline when pricing your gowns headpieces, and shoes,or any item in your store. I am in the manufacturing end of the bridal industry and it is a real shame to see what some retailers are charging for items.Just keeping it honest, use keystone markups,I have seen headpieces, retail at a whopping five per-cent over the honest price point. This is supposed to be the happiest time of a brides life, don't rip her off.

I'm located in Iowa in a small town off I-80 in between Des Moines and Iowa City. I was wondering how and who to locate for wholesale bridal gowns. How do you go about contacting the big bridal companies and is there anywhere to get the branded gowns cheaper? I was also wondering how to figure out inventory turnover rates in the bridal industry in Iowa? Thank you
  • Nonye beginner adviser said on April 13, 2012
@Sharon you can check for suppliers on Alibaba.com or Dh Gate. Look at their real pictures of bridal dresses produced to guage their quality. Next engage an inspection agent to conduct factory visit and verify that the companies are legitimate with evidences. If the result is positive, you may go ahead to order sample dresses. Try a second time, but dont order so many as sometimes they use good samples to lure you before scamming you when you place big orders. Better still, you may visit China or Hong Kong to purchase ready made dresses in their store.

@Kistie Johnson, I think that you may contact the bridal wholesalers directly to find out how to be a partner or retailer. I am not quite sure how to get a branded gown cheaper than how much the brands are willing to sell. All the best

Sharon, I found some really great gowns in Guangzhou in China. There is a whole street selling just wedding gowns and accessories. A great place to find some really beautiful gowns at very reasonable prices, for as long you have some good negotiation skills. You might find some gown sizes too small, but you can make an order and wait 7 days to have it made to fit your taste. You can choose the fabric of your choice too, as you may find the same fashion made in several different fabric. Good Luck
