I am thinking about opening a bridal salon in Central Texas. I am one hour away from Austin where there are several shops and salons, however they are high end. The closest salon to my location is still 30 minutes away and I am pretty sure isn't really my competition. I am considering a variety of purchase/rental modes....vintage, resale, off-the-rack, custom, made to measure, rentals, etc. (My preference is made to measure and vintage options truly) Like everyone else here I have questions about suppliers, but I really want to know is this: in this day and age, what are brides wanting? What part does the internet and world-wide access to gowns play today? My guess is that most brides still prefer is to try on oodles of gowns but aren't afraid to order online from a sometimes distant manufacturer if they are assured of quality and/or comfortable with any return/exchange policies...for a better deal. So, with that in mind I am concerned about over-stocking. Instead I want to supply just enough gowns in different styles so that the bride to be has lots of day-dreaming room but not so many gowns that I get upside-down in my inventory. I have found ads online about a made-to-measure franchise firm in the UK called Dream Dresses. Does anyone know anything about them? I'm not sure they franchise to the US. I would sure like to know about them OR find someone in the US doing the same thing. If you have any information on reputable US made-to-measure manufacturing companies please contact me at Mtin2003@yahoo.com please put "bridal" in the subject line.

Hi! I will open a full service bridal salon in oakland ca in the next 18 months. my gown price range is 300 to 15000 and i plan to sell sizes 4 to 20. I am currently looking at 2 locations, 1750 sq ft and 2700 sq ft. are these too big or not big enough? i want to be able to assist two brides at one time and have space for those clients wanting to sit and negotiate with us for one or more of our a la carte services. how many gowns should i start with? what are the top 3 things diy couples look to vendors for? should i sell mid line jewelry or high end jewelry? should i sign a one yr location lease or a 2 yr location lease? how much markup should i do if the dress is wholesale? if its a sample sale dress is the markup totally up to me? what's the best market strategy, online with a site like the knot? or no, do something else? do i really need a neon sign or will big numbers over the door be good enough? how big a deal is parking? does anyone know what the average cost of interior design is to convert a "blank" space into a bridal salon? anyone know a florist looking to do some contract work with a bridal salon in the sf bay area? I am super happy that I found this site. Any and all feedback is very much appreciated.

I want to be able to assist two brides at one time and have space for those clients wanting to meet for wedding planning/consultation services. How many gowns should i start with? What are the top 3 things DIY couples look to vendors for? Should I sign a one yr retail space lease or a 2 yr lease? How much markup should i do if the dress is wholesale? If its a sample sale dress is the markup totally up to me? What's the best marketing strategy, online on my own or being listed as a vendor with a site like the knot? How big a deal is parking? Does anyone with a bridal business near Oakland mind sharing know what the cost of interior design was to convert their "blank" space into a bridal salon? Can someone tell me what the best method is to figure out how much to mark-up a sample gown for resale? Would someone mind sharing their cost projections for starting their bridal business with 30 to 50 gowns in or near Oakland-San Francisco? I am super happy that I found this site. Any and all feedback is very much appreciated.

  • Nonye said on May 13, 2013
Samantha, Ideally you should have a wide range of sizes to start with but this will mean having to stock up a lot of dresses which you may or may not have enough funds for. There are some considerations to helping you decide. Do brides in your area like to wear pure white or ivory? Which is more common? What is the average size of a bride in your target market? In Nigeria it is between UK 10 and 12. Your area could be different, perhaps. I suggest you try 2 sizes of each for a start. In addition, some styles certainly work for plus sizes and others for petite brides. So, you can do regular sizes for from UK 8-14 for most of your stock and then ensure you limit the plus sizes to plus size styles and perhaps carry a few plus sizes of dresses that are likely to sell out quickly. There is no way of knowing which sizes will sell out fastest. You can only learn with time. If a person needs a size other than what you have in store, you should ask them to place orders. Hope this helps. All the best
