I'm working with Pastors in Kenya. We will be doing a well near one of their facilities. We want to start a tilapia pond for food and community profit and creating work for the towns people. We will be stretching a screen over the pond and raise rabbits with the design that the rabbit droppings will feed the fish. I understand that this is being done elsewhere...please help with suggestions, problem areas and plans if available for this facility. Thanks so much.

howdy. This is a straightforward question from someone who has not been so serious here on this board. I would like to know what is the smallest ground area you would need to start a successful, profitable tilapia and i'm not talking about making any big money, only one man and his wife who luvs gardening. how large does the area need to be to basically raise the fish as to feed himself and the misses and maybe a few close friends. Of course, I will not be eating fish every single day but my meat intake has slowed significantly and i feel the change would be more healthy. ANYONE PLEASE?!? The approx. cost would be about what for this startup?!?
  • Sandy beginner adviser said on May 10, 2011
@LUCKEE, Check out Youtube for loads of videos on aquaponics. You can start a decent little fish farm for $1K I think but you need grow time. If you rig things together yourself there's no reason why you can't make money.

I am from Virac, Catanduanes, Philippines. I become interested with backyard tilapia raising since i saw my father converted his pig pens with a size approximately 2.5 meters by 3.5 meters to a fish pond. It is a covered area and its water source is from the faucet via hose. I think, these are not correct and i'd like to have a good advise from experts on how to raise tilapia from a converted-pig pens -to ponds... Please do email me, thanks a lot.

tilapia are very good source of income if you know how to farm. before start make feasibility study first after that how you raise tilapia you should know the source of fingerlings or make hatchery, water source and the water treatment and the feeds all this if you know you will be rich in no time.. this is what you need trucking for fish to sell and to buy feeds and etc.. every month drain water in ponds for 2 feet and replace fresh water(deepwel or from river)for small ponds big ponds just add water half every week or twice a month it depends on how big it is...
