In the mean time "Egg drop" there, motility and weight fall are there. So many vet I have contacted and accordingly treated. Feed and water cultured in lab. Feed Brand changed to better brand but still not a great improvement there. So requesting for suggestion.Thanks.

    Hi Everyone, This, to me looks like a good initiative to discuss issues amongst egg farmers (seasoned, new and potential). We have been running egg farming for almost 3 years now. We initially started with 250 birds and the first set of birds was a good experience. In terms of profit we didnt make much but it gave us the much needed experience. Today we are having 2250 birds and with much care and attention it is working out well so far. We are also in the process of increasing it to around 5000 - 6000 birds in time to come. What I would like to learn from here is information on processing our own food. Right now the ready made fodder is available in the market but feeding them to chickens is making the profit margin relatively small. If we know the know about I am sure we can increase profit limit. I am running this farm in Central Sri Lanka in a village 2750 feet above sea level. Please feel free to write to me in the email provided. Please abstain from writing or forwarding non nonsensical materials or thrash. I am purely doing this to help my self and like minded other individuals. Regards, Jacob Farm Products

    1) 5000 birds how much will be the cost for setup of cages in 3 layers
    2) cost of each bird of best breed
    3) cost of food / bird / day
    4) what is time period of chicks starts laying egg
    5) approximately how many eggs for 5000 birds /day
    6) marketing
    7) selling rate of egg etc Complete
    Thank you
  • Raghunath expert adviser said on March 8, 2011
    @Venugopal.M,
    • laying shed construction cost will be around Rs.100 per sqft
    • normally egg production will start in 18 weeks.
    • you will get about 80-95% eggs everyday, this means if you have 5000 birds then you will get 4000-4750 eggs everyday.
    • you absolutely not have to worry for marketing, there is sever scarcity of eggs so will sell them easily.
    • NEC controls the egg price, it varies from Rs.2.5-Rs.4 approximately.

    Good day I'm presently a PG student in a university out here in Nigeria, specializing in environmental engineering, Pls i need a document on life cycle assessment of day old chicks to point of lay. thanks
  • Raghunath expert adviser said on March 14, 2011
    @Olayinka, here is your answer.
    • Usually a day old chick are not able to menage their own body heat easily so they need an external heat source. You can hang a 60watt light bulb over their cage. You need to maintain the temp to 30 degree centigrade till four week. after that they can easily cope the atmosphere temp easily.
    • Young chicks need more water so water supply system should be good. Chicks should be given water in sipper drinkers or a water trough. You need to be careful about it, make sure that the water should not wet the bottom of the cage.
    • The most important thing is keep your birds disease free. To make them disease free you need to feed them appropriate food according to their age. keep the cages clean, clean their eating area by removing the old uneaten foods, clean all equipments which are used with them. They need motion so give them enough space to move. BY following all the points you can keep your birds healthy.

    I am in zimbabwe odzani are want to start layers project. want to know how many kilograms will one bird consume from day to laying point
  • Raghunath expert adviser said on March 15, 2011
    @Nyatsanza absolom, Hi Nyatsanza absolom, It depends, i can not say the exact amount but it varies from breed to breed. The birds that are kept in cage usually eat less food than the birds allowed to run around in a coop. Generally a laying bird eat 110g-170g of food a day, remember they will eat much less when they are not laying.

  • Raghunath expert adviser said on March 26, 2011

    @Karunakar Jena, you can definitely keep both types of birds in same place but not in same room. They have different food habits so better check that. You can get loans from various places like society loan, co-operative loan, gramya loan, local banks.

My farm is located in Ikorodu,Nigeria
  • Raghunath expert adviser said on April 1, 2011

    @udofia itoro, Hi udofia itoro, The size of egg usually depends on age of the bird and different breed of birds lay different quantity of eggs. I think the best laying time is 1 to 2 year of age. All layer birds under one year usually lay small eggs first then after that they lay larger size eggs. A 30 weeks hen lays two eggs in every three days so not to worry if your bird are producing smaller eggs because of the age.
