I have been in fish farming for 40 years but I am retiring an have sold all my farms but 28.76 acres in southern Indiana for $75,000 once it is sold I am retired. The Spiehler family has 30 % of the 1 million dollar fish stocking in Indiana and you can buy sell fish from this location. Being a wholesaler or a fish farm raising fish like catfish would not be profitable. It would take too much capital in a saturated market and feed is very high but buy-sell would work LIVE FISH OF INDIANA is my web site

  • Raghunath expert adviser said on April 6, 2011

@srilal francis, Hi srilal francis, during winter only they can not survive in cold water so feed them less when the temperature goes below 45 degree fahrenheit. Feed them once in every 10days for opposing to winter kill.

There is not much difference between male and female catfish, you can easily identify from their size usually female cat fish are wider than male and they looks rounder than male. The male catfish head is also wider than female cat fish.

@Kafui, Hi Kafui, here are some some points to start fish farming in your backyard.

    • Make a tank around 15*15 dimension and fill the tank with fresh water but temperature that you need to maintain will vary from fish to fish. Choose the fish you want to grow in your backyard.
    • Keep changing the water atleast every two week. When you will get the fish from supplier let them stay with the plastic bag inside your tank water for couple of hour so that they can adjust with the temperature change and all.
    • Maintain the feeding time, consistency is the key. When they will grow keep increasing their food.

Hi Friends, I am Coimbatore native (tamilnadu state) and residing in Singapore. I am seriously in consideration of setting up the Fishing farm to meet the domestic and international market demands. I would be interested to join venture with any like wise interested persons in Coimbatore or other part in tamilnadu. Although currently I am not in to this field, I have the luxury of knowing-how flexibility in Singapore as here all the offshore & onshore fish farms are in reachable distance. Anyone interested feel free to contact me. Mr.Govind, rgraj2k3@gmail.com, Mobile: 65-91994325

@sheila johnson Hi, it's great to know you are already a farmer, that at least makes things less difficult for you to understand. It's better to in my opinion built well plastered above ground tanks (like H: 1meter X L: 5meters X W: 3meters)for your expansion. It's more efficient as you can always see the fish and progress you are making. New ponds would be better though if you are not into feeding your fish exclusively on commercial feed. I am both a farmer and consultant. You can get in touch if you like.
