Commercial Endive Farming

Endive is a leafy vegetable that grows as part of the daisy family. Endive is also known for its other term “chicory” with two of the most cultivated endives, curly endive or escarole.

It can be used or cooked raw in most salads. Growing it commercially is a big help, since it can add much profit and food.

In order for a farmer to earn more, one should learn how to start commercial endive farming. As the plant is attributed due to its medicinal properties, it is valued for its eating qualities. Thus, there is never a doubt to consider endive farming. Below are some of the guidelines in starting one.

Preparing the Soil

The very first thing you need to do is to prepare the soil, it is necessary in starting commercial endive farming. Bear in mind that the soil is one of the vital factors to consider when farming. A richer and looser soil should be prepared before the planting time. Never settle in the kind of soil that does not give a guarantee for the plants to grow, or else, endive will not grow successfully. Then, start sowing the seedlings for three to four weeks.

Planting the Endive at the Right Time and Temperature

Once the soil is fully prepared, take some time to think about the right time to plant endive. Plant the crops during late summer, or better yet three weeks when the summer solstice has ended. They must be directly sown in order for them to surely grow healthy. Also, the seedlings will germinate once they are grown at the right temperature. The temperature should range from 70 degrees to seventy-five degrees Fahrenheit. On the other hand, the air temperature should be in between sixty degrees to sixty-five degrees Fahrenheit in order for it to achieve optimal growth.

Supply of Water and Fertilizer

Apart from planting the endive at the right time and temperature, a consistent supply of water is as well needed. It should never be ignored since it has a significant role to play for its optimal growth. Nevertheless, the water should be made not in excess, but in the right amount in order not to drown the plant.

Also, the supply of fertilizer should meet the necessary requirements of the plants. Some of the fertilizers used are manure, cottonseed meal or work compost that work well before planting. Give it a start by placing them on seedlings with fish emulsion.

Getting Rid of Pests

For successful commercial endive farming, getting rid of pests is also important. Control aphids by using an insecticidal soap, but make sure that it is environment-friendly. There is also a need to tie heads only when they become thoroughly dry. They should be taken away from the area in order not to infest the crops.
