Boer Goat Farming

Farming is one profession that can give a lot of benefits to an individual. This is the very reason why a lot of people choose to be in the farming industry. One of the blooming farming businesses today that is gaining popularity in the market is none other than the Boer goat farming.

If you also want to try your hand in this venture, it would be a great help you will know more inputs about it first.

Boer goat farming has a lot of aspects that must be checked into first before you actually start your own farm.

The Boer Goat

The breed of the Boer goat actually originated from South Africa wherein the animals are being developed to produce meat as early as the 1990s. Boer is actually a word of the Afrikaans and Dutch which means farmer. This goat breed is said to have been derived from the indigenous goats herded by Bantu tribes and Namaqua Bushmen. The successive cross breeding from the goat breeds from India and Europe was the reason why they are what they are today. The careful breeding process is actually based on the meat instead of milk production. This is the reason why the goat grows at a fast rate with carcass qualities that are of the best.

Raising Meat Goats: Good Way to Earn Profit

In countries like New Zealand, Australia, United States and other nations, raising the Boer goat meat to earn profit is now gradually taking off and similar with the markets, this is also something that is driven by demand. Although there are a lot of farmers whose attitudes towards goats are a bit negative, they are undoubtedly more profitable as compared to cattle and sheep.

Start Your Boer Goat Farm

The real secret to any enterprise related to Boer goat farming is nutrition as well as proper pasture environment. There are a lot of major differences when talking about the grazing and feeding behaviors of cattle, sheep and goats. There are lots of goat enterprises which try using goat as a weed killer that is friendly to the environment. There are lots who just treat them as supplementary animals to sheep and cattle while others using it for feed lot setup. But there are also those who just focus on nice goat production.

More about Boer Goats

The foremost priority on an enterprise on Boer goat is fencing. These goats are actually very hard to keep especially when they discovered ways on how to escape. When you set up fences, sort them put first. Even though Boer goats might look like to be docile and calm creatures, they will surely try testing a fence and even go through one. Boer goats can also live to a nice age and will even breed for a span of ten years. This breed is also very resistant to diseases yet there are still a lot of things that farmers must be prepared for.

Hi there. I'm a South African Boergoat farmer. I hope you all got answers, but pls email me at sam@dreamlodge with short questions if you want. A lot of people ask about how much land. You have to find out what the feeding capacity of your area is. IN our area its 6 goats with lambs per hectare, and this is a fertile area for South Africa. An adult goat needs 2.5kg of food per day of which 12% should be protein, especially in breeding season. If you can get this off your grazing, that's best, but otherwise you have to feed lucern, or sericia, or some high protein food. Maize is not enough. Boer goats are very adaptable, but they SERIOUSLY hate water - don't try them in areas where it rains all the time, they probably won't breed.
