Cage fish farming is one of the methods used in fish culture. The practice of cage fish farming is very simple and uncomplicated. This technique is widely used by most commercial fish farmers.

According to research, this method can be employed as soon as there is an access to artificial or natural lake or pond.

Employing cage fish farming is possible anywhere as long as the water condition is appropriate. This is a practical method of growing fish because the entire communities share in the body of water. Many fish growers are attracted to grow fish in a cage because there is a great possibility to harvest large yield. Likewise, it is very easy to harvest because the area is small. Also, problems can be recognized immediately because the fish are contained in concentrated area.

Constructing rigid cages is the first step in fish cage farming. Wire webbing or hard plastic mesh can be used in building the fish cage. The frame of the cage should depend on the location because flexible cages are ideal in still water and in location that has lesser threat of predators. Good thing about cage fish farming is that it allows fish growing without employing intensive aquaculture. Likewise, you can build fish cages in some locations such as public or private body of water, multipurpose ponds, deep ponds and brushy ponds.

Another idea to think about is the selection of fish to raise in the fish cages. Before you decide to buy fish you should identify first the species of fish that can thrive in your location. Different species of fish can live in different location and water condition. You can inquire from the concerned what species of fish can live in your location. Some of the species that is suitable to grow in cage fish farming include channel catfish, bullheads, trout, sunfish, carp, American eel and tilapia. On the other hand, if your fish cage is situated in moving water you can choose to grow trout. All species of fish requires water movement so that the waste will not accumulate in the case. Keep in mind that the waste contains ammonia and nitrites that can negatively affect the growth and health of the fish.

Another thing to consider in cage fish farming is the feeding of fish. Definitely, when you grow fish in the cage they will depend their nutrition from the fish food. The commercial fish food contains the proper balance of amino acids, proteins, vitamins as well as minerals needed by the fish to stay healthy and grow. On the other hand, the benefit of this method is during the harvesting time. This is because the fish can be removed from the cage through a hand-held net. Nevertheless, you should be aware of the problems that may rise in cage fish farming.
