How to Start a Truck Driving School

Driving a truck is one of the job opportunities available anywhere. That is why starting a truck driving school is an ideal business opportunity to take.

All you need to do is to know all the regulations about running the business.

Truck driving schools are great opportunity for people who want to learn driving a truck and at the same time obtain license. Obviously, even if you know how to drive if you do not have license you will not be allowed to drive any vehicle especially large vehicles like trucks. In like manner, the vehicle would not give you the license unless you completed driving course in a licensed driving school. That is why for those who want to drive a truck they have no choice but to enroll in a truck driving school. In this way they will obtain driving experience required in passing the state exam. It could be quite lucrative to start a truck driving school especially when former students recommend the school to other interested students.

What to Do In Starting a Truck Driving School?

Truck driving school can be run in public, private or through training programs. Keep in mind that starting this kind of business requires pertinent preparation and investment. Aside from that you should pay attention in formulating business plan. It is very significant in any business wherein you can state your vision as well as the logics of putting up the truck driving school. It is also necessary to cite in the business plan the financial plans, management plans and market analysis. If you do not have enough funds to finance your business the best thing to do is to secure financial backing. The business plan plays a major role to obtain financial backing from investors and banks. That is why to ensure that you can secure a loan see to it that you create a comprehensive business plan.

The next thing to do is to look for facility where you can open your truck driving school. Make sure that the location is appropriate for drive testing of the students. In this sense, you will be required to obtain zoning approval. You should have vehicles that you can use for instructions and during the training. Likewise, hiring office staffs and driving instructors is another aspect to consider. The driving instructor should also possess Commercial Driver’s License.

Plan a curriculum that can help students pass the state exam. It is necessary to include in the curriculum topics such as combination vehicles, control systems and air brakes. Likewise, topics like driving in unpleasant weather conditions as well as vehicle inspection. As much as possible you should acquire accreditation and certification from the concerned agency. In this way your truck driving school will be credible in such a way that it can help attract future students.

I have a school in Tangent, Oregon, I have been in the process of obtaining my Career School License from the State of Oregon for the past 6 months, I have invested $30,000 cash into it so far, I had a truck and necessary equipment I have used in my trucking company needed to start. I have been waiting since May 2013 for the License. I have 35 years experience OTR and have had my own authority since 1994. After my license gets approved I then need to be certified by the DMV as a Commercial Driver Instructor, to receive this you have to take all written and driving tests and pass with an 85%. This is a long and demanding process, Oregon has 8 steps starting with business plan, curriculum, standards and competences, program map, etc... this is not an easy process to go through, I am also been registered as a S-Corporation, so if anyone thinks you can just get a truck and trailer and start teaching think again. You should be able to obtain the info you need for your state by googling it or just start with your state website. If you cant figure out how to get started you shouldn't be in this. It will take a lot of paper work and creative thinking. I hired a Curriculum specialist with a PHD in Education that writes Curriculums for Oregon State University and it took her 135 hours just to help me with the lesson plan that is over 2 reams of paper! Just like you when I started had no idea what I was getting into but, I will be proud of what I have achieved when the time comes. Good luck to you. David Stahl

Nice Article. I have considered opening a truck driving business. I have trained several drivers over the years and have had a very good success rate-meaning all the drivers obtained gainful employment in the trucking industry upon completion. Currently, the company I drive for does not have an in-house training program. Could a person start a business within a business? Could I train possible drivers for the company I drive for? The owner is interested but uncertain of laws.
