How to Start an Import Export Coffee Business

Coffee business is one of the major industries in the world. Many countries are now engaged in the importation and exportation of coffee products. This is because of the immediate and easy availability of coffee products. In Asia alone, most countries are engaged in coffee farming. Resultantly, it becomes easier to put up coffee manufacturing business. Alongside coffee manufacturing business is the exportation and importation of coffee products. Coffee business is an industry which will never die down.

With sufficient amount of funds, facilities, labor, and machineries, it is easy to effectively hurdle a coffee business.

The Goal

Every business, no matter how big or small must have a definite goal or vision. It is the goal that will set up the path of business and what products to offer. It will also guide businesspersons in limiting or extending production and other business aspects. With definite planning, a business can soar and stream with profits.

The Market

Another important consideration in an import/export business is to identify your market. Coffee is a universal product. However, one may produce varied and unique coffee products to suit every age and everyone’s coffee needs. The coffee industry has long been persistent. The competition is therefore tougher. Those intending to start an import/export coffee business will surely have a hard time. As such, it is advised to become more innovative in offering coffee products. Product prices may also be lowered without compromising quality.

The Budget

Coffee business does not regularly require high amount of capital. But those who wish to engage in the importation or exportation of coffee products are required to have higher amount of investment. This is because the production and processing along is costly. Additional expenses will be incurred in the process of selling and distributing coffee products in the international trade. Aside from freight, distribution and packaging costs, licensing and other paper works also requires funding. Funds are also necessary for promotion. Those engaged in import/export business must invest in widespread advertisements. Investing for a company website is a wise decision. While it will entail additional expense on your part, it has a cumulative advertising effect.

Business Counselling

Import and export coffee business is a serious undertaking. It is common for new businesses to fold up early due to lack of planning and poor managerial skills. More problems are to be hurdled if one is engaged in importation and exportation of goods. In this juncture, it is important to also seek advice and help from experts. Establishing link with other companies engaged in import/export then becomes necessary. With the help of financial and business experts, consulates, international players, agents, chambers of commerce and associations, one can better conceptualize what business moves to make.

The Requirements

This business is subject to more stringent policies and government regulation. One engaged in such a business must be well-acquainted in the domestic laws of foreign countries and international commercial laws. Familiarity with these laws makes it easier to file for permits and apply for licenses necessary to import and export goods.

A partner and myself are looking to start a business where we import coffee from co-ops in Kenya and supply different chains, roasters and coffee shops in the Northeast. My partner is from Kenya and has put me in contact with people in the coffee export field in Kenya. I can't seem to find the right fda office to get in contact with to figure out what those regulations and I know there's much more to the idea than just that. Any help, guidance or advice would be greatly appreciated.
