How to Start Garlic Farm


Development in agricultural sciences has made garlic growing easier. Establish your garlic farm and turn it profit making endeavor. Certain aspects are to be given heeding though. An important factor is preparing soil for free draining. It shouldn’t be unnecessarily acidic.

Besides doing so you should also keep soil watered and weed free. Newcomers can start garlic farm if dedication, managing team and maintaining farm is in preference.

Little bit of research is necessary before starting garlic farms. Usually garlic is planted from October to February. Keep track of timing when first garlic shoots occur. It starts appearing from January onwards. Take care of them for better growth. Don’t forget that garlic farming is done in colder seasons in which first 1-2 weeks must have 0-4C. It is physiologically suitable period when plants do bulb formation. Timing and climatic impact must be understood better.

Try to arrange a team of workers for maintaining garlic plants and weed control works. It requires mechanical inter row cultivation process. It can be done by hand hoeing as well. But later option is not feasible if farm is bigger in size. Once this basic preparation completes start the secondary stage of farming. Plants welcome spring season and it is suitable time to apply herbicide. Such arrangement must be done for suppressing weeding.

Do remember that you can’t expect having best quality garlic without weeding. Timely watering makes harvesting easy besides provides opportunity for suitable bulb formation. There are wide varieties of soil conditions in which garlic grows. You may have free draining loam and organic matter. Avoid repeated freezing and thawing while farming garlic. Likewise, extreme heat condition too is not suitable for this crop.

    I have my agriculture land and have been growing cotton, rice and wheat. I am interested in diversifying in garlic cultivation. My canal irrigated land is in south western part of Punjab. Annual rainfall is around 20" and winter temperature is around 5C and summer is around 45C. Lately the subsoil water has risen and I have lost all my Kinnow orchards. Please advice me about alternative crops for better utilization of land.

    I have also been looking for information re: Large scale garlic growing in Uganda. Please contact Kawanda Research Center for better and improved Garlic Seeds and seedlings. Alternatively, you may need to contact one of their out reach officers on; 0773 190 127 or 0703100891 - Ssemambo Patrick. He is very very knowledge and can also advice on the best crops to grow in a certain area after taking the PH soil testing. In due course, he visits and advices farmers on how and what to do for better breeds etc....
