“How to Start a Trucking Business?”

I am curious of really the in's and out's of starting my own trucking company. I am based out of KY and I haul livestock. Of course obvious fees such as DOT number and so forth are required as well as truck and trailer which I have already. Insurance I am still wondering what the best options are. But I am also wanting to haul in only a few states and also in canada. I would like to expand later but I will be driving my own truck until I can build up some capital and then go from there so I would really like to know what I need to do. I like simple steps and anyone that I speak with talks in circles so if I could get the simple steps to get started and know if there might be any hiccups along the way that would be great! Also is their any loans/grants available to help start up the business? Thanks E

Hi, I am currently considering starting my own truck company. I have capital enough to purchase the truck and trailer and probably the licenses, insurance etc. I have experience working on trucks when I was in high school, long time ago for me. I am now in my mid 40s. I have never driven professionally and do not yet have a cdl. I would like to learn the trucking business and purchase my own so that I can pick the loads I want. Any advice ?

food for thought:starting your own t/port is not that easy. The reason they encourage this is to flood the market and then you end up scraping the pot.Remember when starting it's either cash or loan.Cash is a large amount you have to make up again before you show any profit.LOAN -truck on hp diesel, ins, lic, running costs etc and now eg. for every R2.00 you have to make R10.00.you have to pay for the truck plus interest and all of the above.makes you think does'nt it.On the other side you have the brokers who cut prices so that their profits are bigger.they play the owner/drivers off against one another.brokers have been known to take R2000.00 off a jhb--ctown load and for what a phone call and 2 faxes and then its 30 days payment although they collect as soon as the job is done & sometimes there is a cut-off date because the longer the money is in their a/c more interest they get.Remember you are carrying all the risk, truck repairs, ins, hijack, accidents etc, etc.THINK before doing anything and make sure you understand the business.I can go on & on eg. load theft, wheel theft, diesel theft, bad loads, standing time etc, etc.Think it over and if i can give you advice:get contract-if possible-then vehicle to suit the job-load ins, truck ins.talk to transporters and dont get caught in a web of "i will help you"nothing for nothing-you WILL pay for it at the end of the day.OK so thats the tip of the ice-berg now see if you want to change gears or do some "gearing"which is what i have explained earlier[r10.00 for every r2.00]I started with one of the best old trucks way back [oshkosh]breakdowns nothing really-but no more in RSA-not good on fuel though. If you think i am trying to talk you out of it-then no.I have done parcels,containers,lcl-loose freight, passengers, hazardous freight, abnormal loads, fridge work and a bit more.best of luck.

Is it better to travel by day or by night? Day is better for me because during the day there is light. Therefore, you can see a path to your destination. Likewise, starting a trucking business you must be able to see a path to a successful trucking operation. So, the light is information and without it you are working in the dark. Anything else is myth and guest work.

This is in line with the fact that there is a lot of people who require this service, although I have not, as yet, quantified the numbers. Just not sure about its viability and do not know how to go about doing a feasibility study.

In the United States. I have the money to start a transportation company along with enough cash to purchase 3 or 4 used trucks. I am just at a loss of where I head next. I would really like a mentor to assist me in getting off the ground. This has been my life long dream. I am the daughter of a truck driver (who suddenly passed away a few years ago) who raised me and my sister alone with out a mom in sight. I was raised in and around the trucking industry and this is where my heart lays. My father and I were in the works of starting our own trucking company when he suddenly passed away a few years ago. I just need to be guided in the right direction now. Any help would be great! I still have all the contacts from my dad for loads and his brokers (friends). I am not looking at going in to business with anyone so please do not contact me for that. I also am not willing to give out what information that I do have so please do not ask. Thanks! care@mediacombb.net

I've been in the transport industry since birth. Although a lot of people do make lots of money in this industry, there are also a lot that did not made it and lost everything. There is no easy way to make money. Transport is just one of several industries anyone can choose from. It is probably one of the more difficult industries to be successful in. A lot of people see it as easy and enter the market just to cut prices, mess up the market and go down anyway. The equipment is expensive and to obtain finance, very difficult. Then you have to trust a person with this expensive piece of equipment that probably don't even own a car. All transport operation is very much seasonal and you have to know the seasons for the specific transport segment that you are interested in. Be sure you have done your homework good, before laying out capital in this industry.

Ok. I want to start a small one truck company that would start out in the tri-state area of Pennsylvania. USA. I would like to find a business or non profit group that would like to buy the Advertising space on the sides of the trailer. Not lease it. This would give me the capital to purchase the tractor/trailer and get all my fees paid. My goal would be to have 2 big rigs running and 2 companies so that I could put one company on one side and the other on the other side of each of the rigs. That would also allow me to hire more drivers and have a mechanic and a person in the office to take care of this side of the business.

I am a business owner with my own authority. I am looking to hire owner/operators to run anywhere they please with-in the 48 states. I can promise great pay after paying for gas, fees, and truck payments. Email me at wheelsinmotionlogistics@gmail.com. This is a legit business with your own private 24 hour dispatcher. I pay about 80 percent of every load plus I take care of factoring and dispatching. I'm just a small company looking to expand with more available owner operations in the future.

Me and my husband just started our own trucking company. We bought a used triaxel dump truck for $68,000 and we are financing it. We had to put a $10,000 down payment. Some of the costs of business start up are insurance downpayments, money to run your business for the first month, as you probably won't get paid for 30-90 days. You also have to have money for fuel, repairs and the different types of registrations you may need. We got a small loan from the credit union to help us out and we are currently brokers hauling waste from the mill. We chose to keep our jobs and hired someone else to do the driving so this has been a benefit to us until we can purchase another truck. There is money to be made but you definitely need at least $15,000 to start up. Good Luck, Lori, Pittsburgh, PA.

I have been designing freight rating and routing optimization systems for over 20 years. Worked with many large companies. I would like to know how the carriers decide upon rate to charge. What all goes into the decision? I have used the bureau rates, and many TL, LTL and parcel rates; but never designed a rate in full. There are many experienced folks in this group -especially Trucking2Long and Lori. Questions: 1) where can I get all the published tariffs -is it public domain? 2)how does a carrier decide on what tariff to use - what goes into the calculation. 3) Is it worthwhile to offer the tariff building service to carriers? Thanks for your help - willing to pay for information - bk2856@yahoo.com - thanks
