Starting a Horticulture Business

Are you planning of starting a horticulture business? And probably become one of the best horticulturists there. What do you need to do and how are you going to do it?

Horticulture is the industry, science, and art of plant cultivation. This also includes the process of preparing for the planting of seeds, tubers, or cuttings.

This also refers to gardening on a smaller scale. Agriculture on the other hand refers to the large-scale cultivation of crops.
Starting a horticulture business is tough but if you are passionate about it then you may consider these suggestions:

  • The first step to take in any kind of business is the planning stage. A good business plan has an overview of the operational and financial aspects of the business.
  • Do you have knowledge of horticulture? If you have a degree in horticulture then you are good to go. You just need to have the needed funds in doing so. If none then start taking seminars, attend forums and symposia regarding horticulture. Read as many books and magazines regarding horticulture, as you can. There are many books and magazines available in bookstores.
  • Make an in-depth study of all the procedures and the techniques in doing it. The most effective irrigation techniques, the right pesticides for every seedling, plants, vegetables, flowers, trees, etc., practical steps to disease-free crops. Learn the successful way of suppressing weeds without using herbicides. Learn how to produce picture-perfect crops. Learn how to propagate plants through grafting since this requires the right set of skills such as timing and the compatibility of species which is very crucial.
  • A proper pruning technique is also important because it enhances the beauty of almost all landscapes, trees, and shrubs.
  • You also have to know when is the right time to plant the different types of crops and when to harvest them.
  • A lot of people love orchids so you may also want to try growing orchids. But, growing orchids need different kinds of techniques, So you also have to learn the do’s and don't on how to grow orchids.
  • If possible own all the best machinery that you will need, these will help you to get the work done in a minimal amount of time than doing it manually.
  • Be part of horticultural societies. Surely there are members in these societies who can give you sound advice regarding the business.
  • Know the latest techniques and research regarding the crucial issue of climate change.
  • You may also want to consult a feng shui expert. They may be able to give you very good advice but remember they can just guide you. It will never be the gauge of your success. Determination, perseverance and hard work is the best way for you achieve and to succeed.

@Sarah Tsuma, dear Sarah, horticulture is a very rewarding venture but capital is an issue, since u are in Coastal Kenya and have large land, a good shortcut is to grow a crop that has good demand and reasonable price.......u could try planting 5 acres with Watermelon at rainy season......you'll end up with about 100 tonnes of melons for the 5acres....sell at farm price minimum of 15/- and you have 1.5 million in 3 months........thats capital to set up Irrigation equipment for a few acres. Good luck

Its a pleasure to be part of this interesting and educative website. Our country is a middle income and imports 90% of food from neighboring South Africa. It is my ambition to venture into horticulture basically to provide food supply to our people locally. Government is willing to allocate me a piece of land and one of the requirements is to have a detailed business plan for the anticipated project. The project will be based on the South Eastern part of Botswana. Rainfalls here are not reliable and the only alternative is to irrigate if one aspires to fulfill his dreams. On the basis of the aforesaid, i request you to assist in drafting a business plan congruent to my business need which is horticulture.
