I am in shock, I had no idea so many people in other countries wanted so badly to start a rabbit operation. I truly feel you can feed the world with rabbits. I am in America and unfortunately the USDA doesnt recognize rabbits as a livestock animal. If they did I would be the first to try to get funding to create the ultimate rabbit facility. I have been trained by the American Rabbit Breeders Assoc. a long time ago the ins and outs of rabbits...I would truly love to help all of you in creating your own commercial rabbit business. But...being that you are in other countries it would probably be hard to get the breeding stock that we have here. It would be very costly to ship rabbits to you from America because the ride would be hard on the animal to ship and may even kill the animal. They are very susceptible to many things. They for one chew on a lot of things that they shouldn't if given the opportunity. The best thing to do is to contact the American Rabbit Breeders Assoc. to see if they have people raising rabbits in your area or in the same country at least. The New Zealand White and the Californian are the best meat rabbits we have here. Also the new Zealands fur can be dyed to any color. The Animals' whole body is useful in one way or another. Please look into the further, it is a very good idea to do. The rabbit is the animal of the future!

  • Raghunath expert adviser said on March 10, 2011
@susan, Hello susan, I think New Zealand White and Flemish Giant are the best ones. when you will buy the rabbit just make sure they are free of diseases. Before starting a rabbit farm You need to educate yourself on location, housing, equipments, feeding, disease, watering, finance management and breeding. Many information are already here in previous comments and of you need something more in details then here is a good article.

  • Raghunath expert adviser said on April 6, 2011

@Rajesh Ghangas, Hi Rajesh Ghangas, Here are some points which you should keep in your mind before breeding rabbit.

    • People call female rabbit to doe and male rabbit as buck. usually a small breed doe can mate at the age of 5 month and a buck can mate at 6 month old.
    • Before breeding choose the best breed rabbit whose productivity is good genetically.
    • Keep the ratio of one buck to ten doe but it is optional as one buck may be breed seven times in a week even you can use a buck twice a day.
    • You can also mate rabbits of same breed but try using different colors. Try not to keep more than one rabbit in one cage when they are 3 months old.
    • Before breeding, check the bottom of the cage of both the doe and buck for evidence of diarrhea or loose stools.
    • usually the buck has less tendency to breed in the doe's cage so never bring the buck to doe's cage. when ready to breed always take the doe to buck's cage.

@amrit, HI amrit, It is really hard to say about the exact profit you will make from the business but if you want to enter into this farming business then i think it is probably much easier than what you think. You don't need much funds to start this business. You can also start with very low investment and grow as it goes. You can sell the rabbit skin and meat very easily in the market. The white skin is more popular and it has higher value than the colour skin.

I'm in zimbabwe, harare and run a rabitry that has been running for 7years tho i'm not formally trained i believe experience is the best teacher as we are all in different place that affect rabbits differently, for instance weather(tropics are ideal as cold places have low production) and disease(depends on virus and bacterial load in area). in my yearz of production inbreeding and coccidiosis are the biggest enemyz in commercial rabbitry's. And financially an ill prepared product line(meat, fur and leather, manure, affals, e.g pet food) with no market is dangerous as the only profitable way is to sell 100% of the rabbit. i have a business model i would like to discuss with South Africans especially as it is the best geographical partner. email me on tmariti@yahoo.co.uk my knowledge will enlighten or give you the competitive edge

If I recall correctly, you would receive your training by working their farms for a month or two and they would province you with room and board. Thank you.

@Tajudeen.I.Dende, For any livestock enterprise, passion goes a long way because it keeps you going when the business is not going well as expected..so I'm happy you've got the passion for it. Prior to starting a rabbit production enterprise, a lot of factors needs to be considered, this factors will determine to a large extent your mode of operation and success. Such factors are; Your geographical location, climatic condition, land availability, available capital (money), market availability, transportation medium in way that'll reduce transportation stress in your rabbits, clean water sources, the prevalent pest & diseases in your area and its control, infrastructural facilities such as the animal houses/hutches, feeders, drinkers, nest/kindling boxes, reputable source for your foundation stocks that is a disease free farm where you can buy the rabbits/bunnies you want to start up with. Make sure the hutches (rabbit cages) are well constructed and well spaced per cell so that each rabbit get enough space to exercise. Ensure good waste management plan in order to reduce the incidence of diseases & emission of dangerous gases which can affect the rabbits. Keep good and adequate records of all the management practices and keep close observation on the animals. Once all the above mentioned are in place, you're good to go on a very large scale rabbit production.

Rabbit Farming - Lets exam the input and output first
    1. Purchase Cages
    2. Purchase watering system or water dishes or bottles to adhere to the cage (some rabbits prefer dish only)
    3. Decide the type of food required to produce healthy rabbits 4. Pellets, Orchard, alfalfa or timothy grasses, and old fashioned hay. Dried papaya (paw-paw) or pineapple for digestive health.
    5. Rabbits - Types: Can vary on what you decide to use the rabbit for farming.

Output considerations: Breeding and selling with or without pedigree as pet, produce or breeding bloodlines for show, Meat, Fur, Wool production, Fertilizer pellets for farm fertilizer. Never limit your use of the rabbit as it can feed and cloth the world. They are submissive creatures and easy scared so it is important to protect them very well and they will thrive and return your investment over the long run if you do selective breeding, culling and reinvesting in new bloodlines.

Marketing: You need to join a local market or co-operative and if none is available you may need to create one with a group of other rabbit farmers, or if you are specializing in meat you may deal with exotic meat suppliers, if you are wool production you should seek out fiber farmers such as sheep, alpaca and goat angoras to combine your efforts in production. If you wish to be independent then start your own website for retailing or wholesaling your product. Also you may have restaurants that may be interested in your product just make sure you have all licensing requirements meet to deliver a safe and legal food product. To market to restaurants and butchers you may need to design some recipe cards to inspire both them and their customers.
