Pig FarmingPigs can be raised in controlled or free environment, as a small- or large-scale business. But in whatever size, a prospective farmer would need inputs as to how to raise pigs efficiently and in a more productive manner. Read from our guide and learn the basics on choosing piglets, proper nutrition, and ideal housing. Raising pigs can be pursued as a small-scale operation as source of family meat and supplement income or it can be made into a large-scale operation.
Pigs may be raised in highly controlled environments (hog lots) indoor, in open spaces or barns as breeding sows or grown and sold for slaughter to butcher shops. Here are the aspects of pig raising that a grower must carefully consider: Choosing Piglets to RaisePig feeders can be obtained from stock breeders, and producers, in auctions and classified ads. Pigs are of different breeds some of them are well suited for specific environments, indoor or outdoor. Crossbred pigs tend to grow faster, consume feed more efficiently and are vigorous. When buying a feeder, choose the large and healthy looking ones, at least 25 lbs. If you are choosing a male, which is observed to grow slightly faster than females, get one that is already castrated. Male or female, they are preferably immunized. Ask the breeder for health information and stock of the breeder. Proper Nutrition for PigsPigs feed on both grains and meat. They can also be fed with cooked table scraps and vegetables. Corn is their most common food, but they could benefit from having a diet with protein from soybeans or cooked meat. Further, they grow faster with vitamins and other supplements. Piglets have higher protein requirements than mature ones. Feeds can be bought packaged and in bulk. Pigs must also have adequate supply of drinking water daily, about two to four gallons. Provide water either through a tub or automatic nipple waterer. Ideal Housing for PigsPigs need housing to keep them warm during cold temperatures and to shelter them from excessive heat. Pigs are sensitive to heat and could die from heat stress. When housed indoors, temperature conditions must be well regulated. Controlled temperature conditions can help maximize growth. Cooling mechanisms for pigs can come in the form of drip water system or a wallow (for a hog pen). Pigs can be housed indoors in individual stalls, pens (in groups or batch) or in barns. Even if the pigs are raised outdoors they would need a shelter during cold and hot weathers. The housing should have a space for feeding and bedding. Pig Farm SanitationSanitation is important to keep the pigs disease-free. A mechanism for easy cleaning and removal of waste is necessary for any type of pig housing. Some use slotted pen floors to make waste collection easy. Hosing a barn and removal of manure daily are recommended. So is keeping the floor dry to reduce odour. After five to seven months, pigs are likely to reach ideal market weight of more than 200 lbs. They could be sold at livestock auctions or slaughtered for meat. FAQQ. Different breeds of pig for meat? Q. When to sell a pig, what is the best weight? Q. Best breed of pig for meat purpose? Q. Feed requirements? Q. Which is the best breed pig for producing more piglets?

Kennesaw, GA (USA)- I've been very encouraged by the many entrepreneur profiles i've read here especially entry # 63 Mugo wa Muniu and # 61 Peter Wango. I'm currently working in the USA, but my home is Limuru, Kiambu. My wife and I have been discussing a lot about rearing of pigs and infact when i was in Kenya last month, we toured a few pig farms in Ndumberi, Mihang'o and also Karatina areas. We also visited Farmers Choice farm in Kahawa west where we got some good advice. We're currently building several pig-pens on our farm, while looking for a few good pig mothers and one boar. Starting any new venture is always challenging, so I'd like to connect with Mugo, Wango, Sebastian Karanja, Alice ETC plus any other kenyans interested in pig farming...maybe we can encourage each other and share our ups & downs in this pig business. My email is jkwaititu@yahoo: God bless :)

i have read your advise on how to raise pigs, it is very educative. my major concern is on the health of the pigs because if one has to succeed in pig raring one requires to be equipped with some basics on identifying diseases that normally attack the pigs, the causes and probably the remedy to those diseases.

I am hoping to set up a new piggery on a small piece of land somewhere near Entebbe Uganda. I am totally new to this. Would like to see a suitable business plan for this project, structural layout for pens etc, as a beginner. Which breeds( exotic or crossbreed do well in this location?) I hope to really expand in future. Also is it possible to keep both chicken and pigs on the same site and capitalize on the architecture...chicken could live upstairs as I have seen for cows in some areas. Please advice.

OF A TRUTH THIS DISCOURSE IS VERY CONCISE AND GOES A LONG WAY IN PUTTING A BEGINNER ON THE CORRECT PATH WITH REGARD TO PIG PRODUCTION. IT IS ALSO INTERESTING THAT A GREAT NUMBER OF PEOPLE IS BEING DRAWN INTO THE SWINE BUSINESS AND THIS POPULARITY SHOULD LEAD US VETERINARIANS TO ENGAGE IN MORE INTENSIVE STUDIES (BOTH IN HEALTH, ECONOMICS, EPIDEMIOLOGY ETC) ON THE ADVANCEMENT OF PORK PRODUCTION ESPECIALLY IN AFRICA WHERE IT HAS NOT BEEN SO ALL THE WHILE.

I have a modern pig shed at Limuru in Kiambu, Kenya, recently completed as had mentioned on entry 63. The shed is designed in such a way that cleaning of the shed is made much easier and this allows for pig farming without the bad odour that is usually associated with pigs. You may actually not realize there are pigs in my compound until you see them. With a good level of cleanliness, I am able to keep my animals clean and of course healthy, maintaining a fresh environment around. For those who would want to build, I can avail them with information on this, costs estimates, and if required, can help to build through my other other firm involved in such projects, but in Nairobi & its neighborhood.

Doing my pig farming at Limuru, Kiambu County in Kenya. Further to my earlier entries in this forum, I can now report success having sold my first batch of animals for slaughter after 5 months and 13 days of feeding. I was able to obtain a good breed that matures fast despite a few challenges in the business. New farmers especially in Kenya may get in touch with me on animalfarm.af@gmail.com.

Hi i am from Nepal, now in UK. I am planning to start a pig farming outside Kathmandu Valley. However I do not have much idea about that. I want to start farming with less numbers of pigs and in a decent land(not very big) with a very limited capital of course. But I have thought of expanding the business in future. Will you please send me the details about pig farming especially for the beginners.Thank you.

@adesoye clement a, There are lots of agriculture business which you can choose anyone from these as diary, layer, chicken or different kinds of vegetable farming. I will suggest you first decide about your capital i mean how much money you want to invest in your business and where your interests are. It is tough to do a business if you don't have interest in that.

I have a small parcel of good land in Cambodia (about 1200 square meters) and want to run pigs to sell at the local market. I am planning to start a pig farming outside Kompong Thom. However I don't have much of idea about that. I want to start farming with about 8 - 10 pigs and cycle another 8-10 pigs over a 6 month period on the land I have. I will expand the business in the future if land size allows, or I will acquire another small parcel of land if required. Will you please send me some details about pig farming, especially for a beginner. Thank you.

am in uganda(Jinja), i have a small farm of pigs. i have been doing it without proper knowledge and i need all the details from diseases, best way of feeding them and their market.
270. Raghunath on 3/10/2011 5:58:12 PM
@lewis, Hello lewis, to grow efficiently and rapidly pigs need high energy, supplemented with adequate protein and concentrated grain diet which is low in fiber.
What is the regular diet of pig? Barley, oats, corn and wheat are the best energy feed for pig. I think self feeding method allows the pig to grow faster. What are the common pig diseases? They have at least 140 types of diseases, here are the common pig diseases like atrophic rhinitis, dysentery/diarrhea, fever, erysipelas, etc. Raghunath Natarajan 271. bettina formoso on 3/17/2011 9:34:08 AM
manila, philippines, Hi! I am very much interested to put up a pig business but before i do, i want to have an idea on how big or heavy should a pig be before i can be selling them and how much do i sell them for. can you give me a brief sample on weight and cost for it. lastly, if i start with only 2 how much capital will i need? how much do piglets cost and to raise them for selling. hope to hear from you soon. thank you.
272. Raghunath on 3/17/2011 3:21:48 PM
@bettina formoso, Hello bettina formoso, I have added few facts to the FAQ section, please scroll up to see them. Duroc is the most popular breed for meat which can grow faster with less food. Different breed has different prices so it is totally depends on you, which breed you want to choose for your farm.

I am already in the business, however, the biggest challenge is feeds. It contributes almost 90% of the production cost. Please advise on the most cost effective recipe, especially when we the humans, have to compete with the pigs on the food basket. Most notably here is the fish. What can we substitute with the fish? Please advise, how many KGs of feeds would produce a kg of pork. What would be the optimum/appropriate ingredients for these feeds? In other words what formula can I apply to achieve maximum profitability?

I am training former child soldiers and war affected youth in northern uganda to learn and adopt to small-scale piggery care and management for income generation for themselves and their families. We are located near alebtong town, 2-hours car drive on marram road east of Lira, the nearest major town located 6-8 hours bus drive north of kampala. We are planning to put a large scale commercial piggery as a income business to sustain our vocational training operation. We need a volunteer who can either meet our consultation needs, prepare a business plan and/or can be able to travel and do the work of establishment on site. We also need some video recordings showing breeds, care and management of pigs under a modern business skill. It can be sent as a DVD or can be uploaded from a permitted website. Thank you very much for your response and assistance. George

Hello! Thank you for providing this helpful information on piggery. I am working in the Katosi region on Lake Victoria in Uganda with a primary school to help the school develop a sustainable piggery enterprise. We have sufficient start-up funds and would like for the enterprise to become self-sustaining after these funds are exhausted. From the comments it looks as though you have gotten quite a few requests for business plans and more detailed construction instructions. If you have these readily available would you be willing to send them my way? Thanks, Zach H.
