Fast-food Chain Shifts to Healthier Foods

Summary: In its plan to provide healthier meals for young children, fast-food giant Burger King Corp said it offers four Kids Meal menu selections which have low calories, less saturated fats, no trans fat, less artificial sweeteners and sugar, and less sodium.

Instead, the healthier menu will have higher contents of calcium, fibers, potassium, magnesium, and vitamin E.

Fast-food giant Burger King Corp. said it will provide healthier menu for kids, who are the company’s target-market, in line with its plan to offer more nutritious selections compared to other restaurants.

The company said the new Kids Meal menu includes four selections that meet the nutrition criteria required by Children's Food and Beverage Advertising Initiative (CFBAI) and Council of Better Business Bureaus (CBBB).

The restaurant chain said that each Kid menu selection will have calories not exceeding more than 560; no trans fat which is said to cause cancer and obesity, less saturated fats, and 30 percent less calories from fats.

The Burger King also said the new menu selections, which include a side dish, entrée, and beverage, will also have less sodium (salt) and less sugar and artificial sweeteners.

To make it a healthier meal, the fast-food chain said each dish will have additional calcium, vitamin E, magnesium, potassium, and fibers which are important for the growing body of children.

In a statement, company officials said that the shift to healthier food is in line with their plan to target customers’ ages 12 years and below.

Meanwhile, several fast-food chains, especially McDonalds, have been long criticized for providing calorie-laden and fatty foods to consumers and are blamed for the rising obesity not just in the US but in some parts of the world.
