Toys "R" Us Recalls 96000 Substandard Cribs

A world leading toy manufacturer on Thursday recalled around 96,000 units of "Jadine" cribs that were being sold at Babies "R" Us and Toys "R" Us following numerous safety complaints from US customers, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said.

According to legal experts, companies with substandard goods may be held liable for product liability.

A world leading toy manufacturer on Thursday recalled around 96, 000 units of “Jadine” cribs that were being sold at Babies “R” Us and Toys “R” Us following numerous safety complaints from US customers, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said.

According to the CPSC, some 42 complaints have already been filed against the toy manufacturer after its Jadine model cribs reportedly broke. The reports said that wooden crib slats and spindles can easily break leaving a gap for a child to insert its head and could possibly lead to being trapped or strangulation.

Records also showed that four children were reportedly trapped between the slats after being able to break a gap from inside the crib while two of them suffered minor abrasions and bruises, the government safety officials added.

This is the third time that the Jardine Enterprises, a Taiwanese toy manufacturer, pulled out their products from store shelves. In June 2008, some 320, 000 units of cribs were recalled due to safety issues and another 56, 450 in January this year.

Safety officials are now batting for the amendment of the rules and guidelines in the manufacturing of toys, specially the cribs, to make it safer and sturdier. Officials claimed that they are set to deliberate the new safety standards by 2010.
