The US government on Monday said that it is now pushing for the “cash for refrigerators” stimulus package program for the American homeowners. The latest program of the Obama-administration aims to replace old clunkers with new environmentally-friendly and energy-efficient home appliances.

Based on the papers acquired, the “cash for fridge” program would start in the coming fall, which would give consumers up to $50 to $200 rebates from authorized home appliance store.

According to government spokespersons, the program would allow consumers not only to contribute in saving the environment through the new technology in home equipment but also help boost the sales of ailing home appliance stores that were affected by the recession.

These energy efficient appliances would include refrigerators, washing machines, and dishwashers. Companies that would benefit greatly in the program include Whirlpool and Electrolux, which were hit the hardest during the recession.

But the program detail, according to the spokesperson, will vary by state. He added that the Department of Energy has set the deadline of submission of the formal applications on October 15.

According to the DOE, only those appliances with the Energy Star seal will be qualified to the “cash for refrigerator” program.

Meanwhile, the industry welcomed the development, saying that it will be best opportunity for them to showcase the latest technology in home appliances.
