Starting a Christmas Shop

Opening a Christmas shop business may be daunting initially, but everything will come easy if you have sufficient knowledge. Read this article and learn some things you should know before starting your own Christmas shop business.

If you think Christmas ornaments sell only during the peak months between October and December, think again.

A lot of Christmas shop owners would disagree with you. Believe it or not, Christmas items sell the whole year round.

Young and old, rich and not so wealthy, are enthralled with the merry concept of Christmas. Children love to drop by and spend time in Christmas stores, even during the off-season. Hobbyists troop to and scour Christmas stores to search for that elusive collectible ornament they have been eyeing seemingly forever. And for the hard-core Christmas aficionado, it is never too soon to start preparing for Christmas.

The fact that many people have the Christmas spirit nested in their hearts makes starting a Christmas shop a lucrative business venture.

Here’s a list of things you should remember to start your Christmas store.

Find the perfect location. The place where you decide to put up your store will significantly affect your sales figures. Ensure your chosen location is in a visible area readily accessible by the public.

Hire excellent employees that share your vision and passion for your trade. Pay extra attention when recruiting. Don’t settle and hire employees that don’t fit the bill. Once you have hired the employees you want in your dream retail team, motivate them through competitive pay and advancement opportunities.

It is essential for any business nowadays to have an online presence. Build a website for your store that has e-commerce capability. By doing so, you get to reach a broader market base.

Maximize the uniqueness of your trade. By highlighting the specialty factor of your store, you get to draw customers away from large retail stores. This is one way you can compete with the big players.

Meet your customers’ needs and expectations. Make them feel important. Customers will likely tell their friends and family about your store if they are satisfied. That’s free promotion for you.

Take the effort to advertise and promote your store. Even if you carry the most beautifully unique Christmas ornaments in town and all sell for the most buyer-friendly price—it won't matter if your target market doesn’t know your store exists.

Write a business plan. You will need a road map to guide you and ensure you reach your goal. A business plan serves this function.

Write a marketing plan. Research is vital if you want to have an effective marketing strategy.

Hello. I have been wanting to open a store dedicated to holidays especially Halloween and Christmas for many years. I have been decorating both inside and outside my house for over 30 years and everybody always tells me to open a store. I always thought that it could never work but I realize now that, along with a love of plants and flowers, my heart is in the holiday business. But I live in an economically depressed area, I owe money on credit cards, I have a low wage job and, although I have a Bachelor's degree, I have no real background in running a business. How do I begin to go about this? There aren't too many stores in the Bay Area devoted to this. Are there online classes for running a business of this kind and/or books as well? Thank you!

Everything Christmas is now selling franchises nationally for the upcoming holiday season. We are a pop-up Christmas store similar to the Halloween stores that now see open for business. We have perfected our Christmas store model and have open Christmas stores for the past 8 years. Last year we had 4 corporate stores and 3 franchised stores. For more information call Howie at 1-800-940-XMAS(9627).

My Lifetime dream has been to open a Christmas store and keep it open all year long. I was born on Christmas day and have had the magic of Christmas born into my soul. I'm from Upstate Geneva NY in the finger lakes region. Ive lived in Memphis for the past 16 years and will turn 60 yrs old this year. ITs time to move back home and open my store but I have no knowledge on what to do. Only the dream deep inside of me to do this. I have ideas coming out of me all the time and the area I want to open this store up in is so upcoming. It was recently voted the #1 area in upstate any for tourism all year round. If this is possible with your company please let me know. One way or another I will do this and would love for you to be a part of it.

I'm definitely looking forward to opening a Christmas Shop some day. However, I need someone or 2 people who are willing to partner up with me and who know how to do the finances and are Business smart. I just like running the place from day to day in the operations (except for weekends). I am willing to move to a place that has a very high potential for profit. Usually the location is in a very populated area and is in a historic area as well. We would also need to make sure that we have little competition. Also, I am looking for this to be an all year round business.
