  • D.Chandrasekar said on December 30, 2010
Mr.Nandha kumar, This is to inform you that it will cost you aprox 5.5 to 6 crores for wind mill projects per MW and 15 to 16 C for Solar Power projects per MW. So 1.2 C budget is too low for 1 MW but you can approach banks who are now a days willing to finance for wind projects as it is very successful in india. Thanks & best regards D.Chandrasekar, chandra_dcs2001@yahoo.co.in

I have 800 acres in Tahoka Texas. I would like to know if this is a good area to start a wind farming business. If so ,where do I start.
  • Jim Barrett said on January 12, 2011
Mr. Powell Tohoka Texas has a great wind resource, but it is in west Texas. There is a a lot of grid congestion in west Texas so it is very difficult to get the power to market. Are there transmission lines nearby your property and if so what size. A wind farm will require about 10-15 thousand acres to establish a 100MW project. The process will take about 5 years and 1-2 million dollars to develop into a viable project with no assurance that there will be a market for the power once ready to construct. I hope I did not ruin your day.

If you have a turbine that will do 1,000 watts continuously, how do you calculate what an electric company would pay you? Lets say you have 10 turbines that do 1,000 watts continuously = 10,000 watts. Does the wholesale rate for electricity mean a rate per hour, per day, per month? So would I take 10,000 watts X 24 hours in a day = 240,000 watts. 240,000 watts X 365 days a year = 87,600 kilowatts for a year. Is this how this is calculated?

  • Dilipan Vasudevan beginner adviser said on March 11, 2011
@Ravi Jain, The investment required for setting up 1 MW wind power plant ranges from Rs 5.5 to 6.5 crores. The return on investment depends on the selection of the incentive scheme (different incentive schemes are available for wind power plants in India). Some of the attractive states in India for setting up the wind power plant are Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Rajasthan. If you are interested, we can discuss about the project in detail and take matters forward. Please note that the minimum equity required would be 30% of the total project cost and the rest (70%) can be debt financing.

  • Dilipan Vasudevan beginner adviser said on March 11, 2011
@Shinu t ram, for total cost and investment see my comment to @Ravi. The grant of loan would be primarily based on balance sheet of your company. If you are an individual, collateral should be provided for 50% of the total loan amount. Many states in India are offering preferential tariff/feed-in tariff for wind power plants and the recent introduction of the renewable energy certificates makes wind energy an attractive investment destination.

Ok so heres the story, you need 10kilometers for every 100 turbines, turbine cost upwards of $2m and commercial size power lines cost $250,000 for above ground(per mile) and under ground cost $1.5m per mile. The pay off time is minimum of 3-5 years and can be longer. So if you don't have $20-$30m and 3-5 year to wait don't go into the wind business

Thanks all, there has been useful information from few of you. However, grateful if you can indicate approx returns for an investment up to 6 crores. Is there any restrictions from electricity boards? What is the support from state govts like Karnataka and TN? Which are the banks that do financing on these projects usually?
  • Dilipan Vasudevan beginner adviser said on May 18, 2011
Dear Mr. Balu, The returns for an investment in wind energy projects would depend on the location (state) of the wind project and the selection of the incentive scheme. For example, for a wind project in TN under the renewable energy certificate (REC) mechanism, the equity IRR can be around 17-20% and the average ROE (calculated on a simple annualized basis) can be around 23-25%(depends on the realized price of REC). Other incentives for wind projects include generation based incentive, preferential tariff, income tax holiday etc. Many banks in India (for eg SBI) are willing to fund wind projects. Request you to share your contact information or feel free to contact me (email id can be found below) for more information. Thanks.

Hello, I have a 25 acre land on a plateau(ON Top) in place Sausar, Madhya Pradesh. I am interested in a feasibility study of wind mill in that area, though i found a lot of wind blowing on top of it. Moreover i a need a detailed business plan report which focus on the investment required and returns from it. I also require a serious consultant for this project who has a rich experience in this field and who could guide me to start from scratch. I am currently in electronics and infra business and this project would be part of our expansion drive in green energy business. Interested consultants can mail me at taori.nihar@gmail.com.

We own land near Pune which is suitable for the business. This question is purely from "cost point of view". Even a fair idea of the cost is fine with us. Kindly respond.
