Starting a Furniture Making Company

Business planning is a must for any startup. In the process, a prospective business owner must make many decisions that determine how the company will be run later. You must know every home, office, or shop needs furnishings; even a fully furnished space will need some refurnishing sooner or later.

This only means that there will always be a demand for fixtures like sofas, beds, tables, bookshelves, lockers, and cupboards.

If your locality is developing rapidly, you can be sure a furniture-making business will be a hit. If you think you will do well by opening a furniture business in your area, here are some questions that could help you formulate a business plan.

Buying an Existing Furniture Company

You can start a furniture business by buying an existing one or creating one independently. Assuming a company, you would have the advantage of getting cash flows immediately -- and possibly -- an established reputation and a solid clientele base. But check on possible downsides like unpaid debts and some records of customer complaints. Also, discover the reason why the owner is selling. This could help you decide whether or not you want to pursue a transaction.

Starting a Furniture Making Company

If you plan to build a furniture business from scratch, you would have to decide on several other matters besides the usual questions about the business structure you will adopt. You must determine the type of furniture store you will be. Will you be a big outfit offering all sorts of furniture or a small but specialized one? Will you be supplying locally, or will you reach out to a broader market? Will you be establishing a presence on the Web and accepting orders online? Will your goods be all-new, or will you have second-hand ones? Will you allow customization? What will your line of stocks be? Will you hold an inventory or supply goods as they are ordered?

Furniture Making Business - Specialization

If you want to specialize, will you offer a particular product type or sell at a specific market? Who will your main customers be? Will they be households, offices, or luxury accommodations? Will you sell expensive, top-of-the-line items or cheaper ones for the lower end of the market? Will you concentrate on wood or metal furniture? On the finer points, will you sell accessories like linen, cushions, lighting, and mirrors? Will you handle reupholstering, refinishing, and repair? Will you have a delivery service? Will you give discounts and special offers? Will you allow credits? What will be your policy regarding returns?

looks like we all have the same idea, i'm a tradesman in furniture making certificate 3, i work in a high class furniture making company but want to start my own business from my backyard after hours and weekends (my own designs targeting everyday affordable furniture) while still working at work due to income and the knowledge and love i have for making beautiful items. as like many i'm fine with the making of furniture but outside work i havent got all the machines i need to make from home. i am lost trying to get help due to the circle they seem to take me in without giving me the answers i need and unable to startup with questions like, licenses? zoning? marketing? free professional advice? government funding if it is available to help start up? things like that. anyway if anyone has advice that had or having this problem please help or stay in touch, or add me to facebook for longer chats: Max Thorp i'm in Tasmania, Australia. thanks for your time and hope our dreams come true one day. to the above i wrote, if you add me to facebook please tell me something like furniture or something so i add you as a friend, thanks

Andrea, drop shipping if you get a proper one is risk free. at most you pay the fee to put your add on a site like ebay. drop shippers are the middle man. you find items on there sites and become a member, then you place the add and price you want to charge aswell as a postage calculator so people can work out how much postage they pay to get it delivered to them. (note some items are free postage) then you wait for someone to buy the product, you wait for payment via paypal (best but has fees), once payment received you log into the drop shipping site and purchase the item you sold. not sure but it should come up with details you put the buyers name and address (found on the paypal payment details), the item gets posted direct to the customer (they never know its drop shipped). and you keep the profit. be careful its wholesalers that charge you before you sell. notice: i am not a professional, i tried to drop ship 1 item a yr ago to try it out but had no buyers. also most drop shippers have a chat help online box, they help you with any questions you have. good luck, i forget most of the sites but remember chinavision has a drop shipping part.

  • Shane Seymore beginner adviser said on August 31, 2016
Guys I work in South Africa for a major furniture company, I would love to start my own furniture company as I have worked in this industry nearly ten years. We manufacture our couches and design them, the wooden products we import, but there are repairs and logistics as well. It is very difficult to start your own company first there's a thing called patent search, then if it doesn't exist you have to patent your idea before you can mention it to possible investors as I do not have the capital to start up, I need my own factory and someone that can design furniture as well, also in short supply. To start up a business like that with a showroom as well and staff you need your overheads to covered for at least the first 3 months and you need back-up kapital for unforeseen costs all in all your looking at 5 million rand, then you have a factory, machinery, staff, showroom and back-up capital, because you will need to become established before your business is constant, which includes marketing. Also an easy and fast big order approach is to go see hotels and guesthouses in the area to see if they would require any furniture, also offer value added services like linen, synthetic plants, custom designs and staining, and variety in fabrics and leather. Then also the more recycled product you can include in your manufacturing process the more you save on production costs and help the environment plus your creating jobs. Use cheaper materials but not to cheap so that you can maintain your reputation and not be overwhelmed by quality complaints. If your aim is to supply high end high quality furniture, you will only corner a small percentage of the market, if you supply your furniture too cheaply your brand will die as rich people do not want to buy what poor people have in their home, so there must be a balance to cover a large market share and maintain a good brand name. One last thing is if you have a showroom with sales staff, they should be trained and professional but let the client feel like they are part of the family, they become more relaxed and are more likely to visit you again, more then that your after sale service should be even better repair turn around times in S.A is 4-6 weeks, that means your client is without couches for that period, so use loan couches. Quality inspection is a big part as a faulty product leaving the factory results in negative feedback from clients and ultimately impact on profitability....may all go well in your endeavors.

    Furniture Business Owner

Hi, We currently manufacture exclusive wooden furniture combined with steel. This includes decorative items for the home. We have a small client base and would like to expand. My dream is to have a shop which displays these items. How do we expand to a shop?

Hi @YVETTE, here are few tips to consider for opening a retail point for your furniture.
    1. Find a place where you think your customers will come to buy a furniture.
    2. Size of the place depends on showing items and the amount of space you need at a minimum to fit them in
    3. Settle on a contract with the house owner
    4. Apply for a retail license at your local clerk office
    5. Do some interior work for the shop, make sure to have enough lighting
    6. Hire 3-4 people to manage the store for you
    7. Pricing the items is not a big deal for you as you are already doing the same business
    8. Do some marketing and spread the news of new furniture store in the neighborhood
