Starting a Beef Cattle Farm

Starting a beef cattle farm is such a profitable business. If you are interested about this kind of business, you need to know the pros and cons for you to succeed.

Starting right is the key to success.

Just like in starting other types of business, you need to be familiar about the things you need to know before starting your own cattle farm. It involves animal care, hard work, effort and the most important is the capital that you would use in starting the business. You also need to establish solid foundation as well as a concrete business plan. Earning huge profits is not that easy unless you established a solid and good start. Everything else will follow as long as you are focus in your business and not just the profit.

Important Considerations in Starting your Cattle Farm

As you start the cattle farm, you should keep in mind that various breeds do better in different climates. Some breeds are perfect for the production of beef while others are good for milking. In choosing the right breed, you should select one that would do well in your area and suitable in the business you desire. Obtaining ideas about cattle farming cannot be obtained solely by reading books and theory. Before you start your own cattle farm, it is ideal if you are hired in a cattle farm so that you will gain your own knowledge and experience. This would also help you decide if the business is right for you.

Once you are decided to engage in this business endeavour, the next step that you should do is to obtain a land. Your dream of raising the cattle farm would not realize if you do not have the proper location. You will also need to invest in the fencing. Make sure that the fence is heavy and firm to house the cattle. Planting trees within the farm is also important to provide shade to the animals. After establishing and preparing the location, then it is the right time to purchase cattle. However, you only need to have 1 bull otherwise they would fight each other.

Cattle farming are an appealing activity for people who have the necessary land and resources that are competitive. Farming cattle is not all about setting up the business but also a good start if you want in dairy cattle farming, beef cattle farming as well as pure cattle farming. Indeed, cattle farming are growing progressively all over the world. Nevertheless, farming cattle is a sensitive business, as you need to consider many things. Aside from taking into account the deadlines and productions, you also need to consider the welfare of the cows as living things.

I found your web site while trying to find ways to supplement our cattle ranch. I must say that what I read was going to help me to decide whether you were credible or not. You input on the cattle business was right on target.

The number one limiting factor in the size of any cattle herd is land. It was once said that to have a viable cattle herd to support a moderate income for a family was 300 mother cows. Now that number has more than doubled. Even though the price of beef has increased in the last year, so has the expenses. Honestly, the price of beef has not kept pace with inflation. It also used to be said that you could buy a pickup for the price of six weaners. Now it would take at least sixty. That is just a half ton single cab truck. Not the crew cab diesel ones that are so popular now.

Telling someone interested in being the cattle business to go and work for someone else was the best advice I have ever read. It is a lifestyle, no a way to become wealthy. If you want to work hard, spend time with your family and worry where your next paycheck is coming from, than this is the occupation for you. If you want guaranteed income, retirement, health benefits, weekends off and only to work an eight hour day, then don't quit your "regular" job!

    1. I am in Limpopo, Lephalale area in Marken. I bought a cow, which was also pregnant in 2008 and agreed that she would breed and take care of it for me. After it gave birth, he replaced my calf with a cow ready to give birth to help me increase my herd/breed easily. I used to visit but not that often. I contacted him in October 2012 wanting to confirm my herd/breed and he told me that they are still only 2 and never got pregnant to give birth. I expected that I should have at least 16 cows n calves by the time I made the inquiry. Is that possible or should I take further steps to claim my full herd?

    2. Secondly I have a brother and an uncle who have more than 80 herd of cattle, amongst the three of us 50 goats and about 30 sheep and are looking for a farm that could assist to grow our breed/herd. This would assist us in breeding and selling, and may be later to expand into an abattoir to supply approximate butcheries, lodges, etc. Please help

The farm is located in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa about 120 miles from Durban. The farm size is about 930 hectares. Part of it is arable (sugar cane) and the rest is good for grazing land. Next to the farm are located large sugar cane farms. I would like help with writing a business plan and financing for cattle farming - both beef and dairy, sheep and goats. The project would create many jobs, facilitate food security, as well as generate income for the local population. It's such a huge farm that it would take about a half day to ride around it on horseback.

I own a farm land of about 800 acres located 200km away from Tanzania's capital city of Dar es Salaam. My intention is to establish a cattle fattening business. For me the market for my products is already there. My main concern is how to go about the fattening process. So I would like help with writing a business plan and financing for beef cattle fattening business on this farm. My plan is to buy cattle from farmers during dry season when they are unable to look after them because of food shortage and fattening them for few months before sending them to the market.

From your comment, I learned that you are in need of some idea in farm construction, but I may know how is it now? How many cattles do you need to buy from farmers? Nice day, David

i have started a beef farm in Botswana. it is in the southern part of the country...the rainfall in this area is very low and unreliable..which means we experience long dry season where our animals are supposed to walk for long distance to get water and to graze...the grass during the dry season dry off and become unpalatable to our stock and which means we have to regularly supplement our cattle.
