Since the opening of the first Disney store in Glendale, California in 1987, Disney stores are now located around the world. And after going through a lot of paperwork on a proposal to become a Disney licensee, Disney management reserves the right to accept or reject your application based on their judgment.

Getting Disney Store Licensing Information

If you are interested in becoming a Disney licensee, visit the Web site of the Disney Consumer Products -- the part of The Walt Disney Company that brings the Disney brand available as merchandise -- to know the requirements to become a licensee. An application for a Disney store license would require, among others that your company have at least five years of experience in manufacturing, distribution, and/or retailing and the same years of experience in retailing the category of product you wish to license. You'd have to extensively describe your company, including your scope, size, annual revenue and whether you are holding other licenses. You’d also have to provide information about company executives, and a proposal on how you intend to conduct a Disney store operation.

Disney Store Products for Licensing

The products you can license include softlines, which encompass accessories, apparel, footwear, nightwear; toys such as action figures, activity crafts, construction, board games, puzzles, dolls, toy vehicles, playsets, sporting goods; home decor; stationery; food; drinks; beauty products, and personal care products for babies and adults; electronics items like small appliances, camera, communication gadgets, and computers. The Disney Consumer Products Web site has an extensive list of items that can be subject of your proposal.

Rights to Disney Products

If you own a small store and thinking of selling Disney merchandise, be aware that Disney is aggressively protecting the rights to its products and could exercise that legal right.

I am from Athens, Greece. On behalf of a friend, I would like to learn the procedure of starting a disney store in Athens. My friend has been recently to a disney store in Italy and he was amazed by the whole concept. He knows that there is not a store like that here in Greece and we couldn't find anywhere information about starting a business like that. So, we would be grateful if you could inform us about the terms and the franchise policies of having the exclusiveness of a disney store in our country. What are the requirements that someone has to have in order to open this store here? What is the minimum operating capital that someone must have just to use the name of this company? Also, what is the percentage of profits that my friend would be obliged to return to the parent company? There must be a standard contract which refers to all these (and much more) details. The operating capital and the franchise terms are the basic things we would like to learn at the beginning, in order to have the exclusiveness of such a store here in Athens. I have visited other cities where the Disney stores are located and I wonder why nobody has never thought of opening one in this beautiful commercial touristic city!
